BOISE, Idaho – Zak Hill has been promoted to co-offensive coordinator, head coach Spencer Danielson announced on Wednesday.
Hill rejoined Boise State prior to the 2025 season to coach the quarterback room, a role he'll still maintain with his promotion. Under Hill's leadership, the Broncos had three passing games with over 300 yards - Maddux Madsen threw for 307 and 321 yards against Eastern Washington (Sept. 5) and App State (Sept. 27), respectively, while Max Cutforth totaled 341 yards against Utah State (Nov. 28) on his way to claiming Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Broncos are one of five schools across the FBS ranks to have multiple players with over 300 yards passing.
Madsen returned from injury for the MW Championship against UNLV on Dec. 5, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for one more to lead the Broncos to a 38-21 victory. Madsen's four touchdowns tied a MW Championship record, and the American Fork High School graduate became the first quarterback in league history to throw for and rush for a touchdown in back-to-back championship games. For his efforts, Madsen was named the game's offensive MVP.
Prior to rejoining Boise State, Hill served as an offensive assistant with the Seattle Seahawks. He helped the Seahawks to the NFL's eighth-best passing offense in 2024, averaging 236.5 yards per game.
In 2023, Hill won the 6A state championship in Arizona while coaching at Saguaro High School. Before that, he worked as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arizona State from 2020-21, overseeing the development of eventual Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.Â
Hill first coached the Broncos in 2016, serving as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. That season, Boise State led the Mountain West in total offense (472.8 yards per game) and helped quarterback Brett Rypien earn first team All-MW accolades. After being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2017, Hill guided the Broncos to victories in the MW Championship and Las Vegas Bowl. Rypien repeated as a first team All-MW selection and Cedrick Wilson set the program record for single-season receiving yards (1,511).
In 2018, Rypien was named the MW Offensive Player of the Year and concluded his career as the conference's all-time leader in passing yards (13,581). Alexander Mattison rushed for 1,415 yards, finishing atop the conference and eighth-most in the FBS. The Broncos won the MW title again in 2019 and finished the season ranked No. 19 in the final College Football Playoff poll of the year.
Before his first tenure in the Treasure Valley, Hill was the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington. He spent six seasons (2009-15) with the Eagles, earning five FCS playoff appearances and six Big Sky titles. Hill got his start in coaching as a student assistant at Eastern Washington in 2004-05, before coaching at Hillsboro High School from 2006-08.
Hill was an All-American quarterback at Central Washington, playing from 1999-03. The Portland, Ore., native notched 8,882 yards, 76 touchdowns and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2013.
