| Job Description |
Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, dietitians, strength and conditioning coaches, and other allied health care professionals to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation, intervention of emergency care, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.
To become a certified athletic trainer, students must graduate with Bachelor’s degree, then obtain their Master’s degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention and rehabilitation, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through clinical education experiences.
While the University of Illinois does not offer a degree in athletic training which qualifies students to become certified athletic trainers, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics does utilize Athletic Training Aides to assist in the daily operations of the athletic training rooms. Athletic Training Aides are student who observe, learn, and assist the certified athletic trainers in the care and rehabilitation of varsity student-athletes. This clinical experience is valuable for students wishing to pursue careers in healthcare fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant and orthopedic medicine.
