Letter to Bronco Nation

Welcome to the Legacy Project.

In this space, we will highlight and bring to the community’s attention the history of Boise State University’s Black student-athletes. We endeavor to showcase the impact these student-athletes have had on Boise State and beyond, while opening an important door to connect the past and present. The initial members of the Legacy Project are a fraternity of proud Broncos who competed for the Blue and Orange from 1968-80. This group attended school during the early years of Boise Junior College, Boise State College and later Boise State University, laying a significant part of the foundation for the University we know and love today.

The former athlete profiles featured within the Legacy Project represent many proud Black student-athletes from past Bronco teams. The growth of the University into today's recognizable research institution and its major athletic programs is directly correlated to this group of athletes.

Our goal is for the Legacy Project to be displayed prominently and appropriately, providing insight to the commitments and contributions of this group of former student-athletes, which includes several Boise State Hall of Famers.

We have a special bond with the University. It’s where we developed, matured and became productive men. Following the completion of our individual studies, we embarked on many successful careers and professions, including high-level executives, a Ph.D., a best-selling novelist, a world-renowned wildlife sculptor, a world-champion rodeo roper, and professional and collegiate coaches.

We feel “bleeding blue” also means “never forgotten.”

We believe giving the well-deserved recognition to Black former student-athletes shines a bright light on the University, and the state of Idaho as a whole. We, as Black former student-athletes, live all across America and love representing Bronco Nation’s past, present and future through positive representation and actions.

Acknowledging this group of past Bronco student-athletes codifies a long and storied history of acceptance and outreach from the University; giving credence, through a historical perspective, to the University’s decades of commitment in recruiting all athletes, regardless of race.

It also helps all of us - past, present and future - remember that how we got to where we are today has a common tie that binds us for life.
