Dirk Koetter
- Title:
- Head Coach
Following a highly successful season as the offensive coordinator in 2024 and a 40+ year career in coaching, Dirk Koetter transitioned to a senior analyst role with Boise State in 2025.Â
The former head coach in the collegiate ranks and NFL helped the Broncos rank among the best in the country in offense in 2024. Boise State finished the season eighth in the nation in total offense, fifth in scoring offense and eighth in rushing offense. The Broncos also won the Mountain West championship for the second year in a row and reached the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl as the No. 3 seed.Â
Koetter first transformed Boise State into a Division I-A/FBS contender, leading the Broncos to two conference titles, two bowl wins, and a 26-10 record in three seasons from 1998-2000. He also served as the interim offensive coordinator for Boise State in 2022.
After his first stint at Boise State, Koetter spent six seasons as Arizona State’s head coach (2001-06), leading the Sun Devils to four bowl appearances.
Koetter then transitioned to the NFL, serving 14 seasons in various roles, including offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He became Tampa Bay’s head coach in 2016, guiding the team to a 9-7 record in his first season.Â
Koetter's collegiate coaching career saw five stops before Boise State. Koetter's first stop was at San Francisco State, where he spent 1985 as the offensive coordinator. At UTEP from 1986-88, Koetter served his first of four straight stints as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, later moving on to Missouri (1989-93), Boston College (1994-95) and Oregon (1996-97).
A native of Pocatello, Idaho, Koetter played at Idaho State, where he was part of the 1981 Division I-AA National Championship team. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ISU. He and his wife, Kim, have four children: Kaylee, Kendra, Derek, and Davis.
