In his first season back at Boise State in 2024, Collins helped the Broncos earn a No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, win back-to-back Mountain West championships for the first time in program history, and complete the regular season ranked in the nation’s top-10.
During the 2023 campaign in Happy Valley, Penn State received three all-conference honors for special teams as Collins helped the Nittany Lions secure a bid to the Peach Bowl. Senior kicker Alex Felkins, named All-Big Ten Second Team by the media and Third Team by the coaches, owns five career games with three field goal makes. He has hit four career field goals of 50+ yards, 19 of 40+yards and is 121-of-125 on extra points. Meanwhile kick returner Nicholas Singleton, an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honoree, averaged 25.5 yards per return in his two years at Penn State and under Collins’ guidance, a mark that ranks ninth in Penn State history.
In his first season at Penn State in 2022, long snapper Chris Stoll won the Patrick Mannelly Award, honoring the nation’s top player at his position while true freshman Nicholas Singleton, who posted a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown at Rutgers that season, earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors as a return specialist.
Collins made his initial appearance at Boise State in 2021 as the special teams coordinator and EDGE coach. During that campaign, Collins’ special teams unit blocked three punts to T-7th nationally and four kicks to rank ninth. Of the three blocked punts the Broncos recorded, two were returned for scores. Under his leadership, Boise State finished fifth in the nation and led the Mountain West Conference in punt returns (15.77). In addition, Boise State’s kickoff defense was second in the MW and 36th in FBS (19.03).
Broncos’ kicker Jonah Dalmas was an All-Mountain West First Team honoree and a Lou Groza semifinalist under Collins’ tutelage, going 26-for-28 on field goals, including a school record 26 consecutive attempts. He also guided punt returner Stefan Cobbs to All-Mountain West Second Team honors in an explosive season highlighted by an 81-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Prior to his first stint at Boise State, Collins spent five seasons (2016-20) at Utah State, including last year as the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. In 2019, he was the Aggies’ special teams coordinator and running backs coach, he mentored inside linebackers in 2017-18 and served as the special teams coordinator in 2016.
During the 2019 campaign, placekicker Dominik Eberle was All-Mountain West First Team and a Pro Football Focus Honorable Mention All-American. He set 14 school records in his career and signed a free agent contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. Savon Scarver was All-Mountain West First Team as a return specialist while Collins was named the Mountain West Special Teams Coordinator of the Year.
Utah State led the nation in turnovers forced (32), interceptions (22) and three-and-outs forced per game (5.69) in 2018 and was ranked third nationally with six defensive touchdowns. Collins mentored sophomore David Woodward, a Pro Football Focus All-America first-team and Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honoree. Woodward also garnered All-America third-team accolades from the Associated Press.
Collins served as the Aggies’ defensive coordinator for the New Mexico Bowl that season, a 52-13 victory over North Texas, and Utah State finished No. 22 in the Associated Press poll.
In 2017, Utah State ranked 19th nationally in passing yards allowed (182.5 per game) and was in the top 10 in defensive touchdowns, forced fumbles and turnovers forced.
During the 2016 season, Collins helped Utah State rank third in the Mountain West and 38th nationally in kickoff return defense (19.47 yards per return).
Prior to Utah State, Collins was the head coach at Division II South Dakota School of Mines for four seasons and led the Hardrockers to winning seasons in 2013 and 2015.
In 2014, South Dakota School of Mines set single-season school records for first downs, passing yards and total yards. Over the 2014-15 seasons, 14 student-athletes earned all-conference honors.
Collins spent the 2011 season as the special teams coordinator at Portland State when placekicker Zach Brown was an All-American.
From 2008-10, Collins was the special teams coordinator and linebackers/defensive line coach at Central Washington. Placekicker Garrett Rolsma was an All-American and two-time all-conference selection for the Wildcats.
Other stops in the journey for Collins include Southern Oregon (defensive coordinator, 2007), Idaho State (linebackers, 2005-06), Western Washington (linebackers, 2003-04/special teams coordinator, 2004), South Dakota School of Mines (defensive coordinator/safeties, 2002) and Western Oregon (linebackers, 1998-2001).
At Western Washington in 2004, Collins coached punter Mike Koenen, who went on to play 10 seasons in the NFL.
In addition to his collegiate experience, Collins coached three seasons (1999-2001) for the Vienna (Austria) Vikings of the European Federation of American Football. The Vikings won Austrian national championships each season.
Collins played linebacker at Western Oregon for four seasons (1993-97). He earned a bachelor’s degree from the school in physical education (1998) and added a master’s in education (2001).
A native of Sutherlin, Oregon, Collins and his wife, Mandi, have four daughters, Kayla, Mackenzie, Kylee and Mackenna.
