Mike Petrino enters his sixth season as an assistant coach with Boise State women’s basketball, where he primarily works with the Broncos’ defense. Petrino joined Boise State with 28 years of coaching experience, including a decade at the collegiate level. Most recently, he served as the interim head coach at Montana.
Since taking over the Broncos’ defense for the 2025-26 season, Petrino has helped Boise State establish one of the top defensive units in the conference. The Broncos held opponents to a 28.3% shooting percentage from 3-point range, the lowest mark in the conference and the best in program history since the 2008-09 season. Boise State also forced 524 opponent turnovers during the 2025-26 campaign, its highest total since 2018-19.
Petrino was named Montana’s interim head coach in April 2020 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach with the Lady Griz. He guided the program through the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season, leading Montana to a winning record while helping two student-athletes earn All-Big Sky honors. The team also posted a program-record 3.61 grade point average.
During his four seasons as an assistant at Montana, Petrino contributed to all aspects of the program, including recruiting, film study, scouting, game preparation and practice instruction. Before arriving in Missoula, he spent one season as the video coordinator at Colorado.
Petrino is also familiar with the Mountain West, having begun his collegiate coaching career at Wyoming. From 2011-15, he served four seasons as an assistant coach for the Cowgirls, overseeing recruiting efforts and helping the program make significant strides. Among his recruits was Liv Roberts, who went on to earn Mountain West Player of the Year honors. During Petrino’s tenure, Wyoming improved from 12 wins in his first season to three winning seasons, including a 24-win campaign in 2012-13.
Before moving into the collegiate ranks, Petrino spent 10 years coaching and teaching at Central Catholic High School in Portland, Ore., including five seasons as the boys’ basketball head coach. He compiled a 97-37 record during his tenure, leading the Rams to five conference championships, three conference Coach of the Year honors and two third-place finishes at the OSAA 6A State Tournament.
A Montana native and graduate of Montana State University Billings, Petrino began his coaching career at Flathead High School in 1993. He spent nine years coaching throughout the Montana high school ranks before moving to Portland.
Petrino and his wife, Kelly, have two daughters, Jamieson and Hayden.
