Boise Turkey Day Game Nip and Tuck with Neither Side Scoring
BOISE, Idaho – Football athletes of St. Joseph's Academy and Boise Junior College struggled to a scoreless tie in the Thanksgiving Day contest here, marked by a stirring finish that saw the Saints hammering at the college goal line.
Â
Twice within the last quarter, the parochial eleven advanced the ball to the 2-yard line, only to be turned back the first time by a stubborn defense, while the gun ended the second scoring threat.
Â
A slippery turf made ball carrying performances difficult. Until the final period neither team pressed closer than the 20-yard line, and the contest settled into a punting duel.
Â
Broncs' Line Tightens
Â
Opening the fourth quarter, however, both teams broke loose with desperate attempts to score a touchdown, and brough the game to a thrilling climax. Alternating between Nydegger and Eiguren, Saint ball carriers, the St. Joseph squad took the ball on a series of split bucks down to the college 2-yard line. Here the Saints met determined resistance from the Broncs' forward wall.
Â
After punting out of danger the Broncs got hold of the ball again and made their only threat with a series of four successful passes, but the attempt ended still 15 yards short of a touchdown.
Â
Intercepting a pass, with the game growing late, Nydegger eluded tacklers to reach the B.J.C. 10-yard marker. The Saints turned on the power and were within a yard of the goal when the gun was fired. Here again only the stiffened Bronco defense saved the college from defeat.
Â
50-Yard Sprint
Â
Eiguren, St. Joseph fullback, supplied an early thrill when he took the opening kickoff for a 50-yard sprint, but the Saints could go no further. The game marked the closing contest for both teams. With a 6-to-0 triumph in an earlier game, St. Joseph's holds the edge in the season's rivalry between the two schools.
