Second Half Rally Results in Winning Touchdown and Point Conversion; Fumbles are Frequent
BOISE, Idaho – A second half rally that brought a touchdown and staved off a strong Boise Junior College threat gave Albion Normal School a 7 to 6 victory here Friday night.
The Boise Junior College Broncos scored first, early in the second quarter, after a long pass to Nalley, halfback, put the ball in scoring territory. The kick for point was blocked. Albion ran over her score in the start of the third quarter after recovering a fumble on the Junior College 10-yard line. The kick for extra point sailed true and the narrow margin of victory was registered.
Coach Ted Bank of the Idaho Vandals sat on the Junior College bench during the game, watching the play closely. Nevada players watched part of the contest from the grandstand. A mist covered the field and made visibility poor.
The Boise Junior College made nine first downs to Albion's five but the visitors proved veritable ballhawks and time after time recovered Bronco fumbles. There were plenty of fumbles by both teams, but where there was a loose ball there was always an Albion man to smoother it.
Cooper, Albion quarterback, proved the star of the game. He made long returns of punts, good gains through the line and around end, scored the Albion touchdown and snagged many a pass out of the air. Nalley was one of the best ground gainers for B.J.C.
Boise Junior College punting was superior in the first half but Albion adopted a kicking game in the last half to keep the ball deep in Boise territory.
Neither team threatened in the first quarter, until the Junior College started a drive from its own 20 that reached midfield. From there a long pass to Nalley put the ball on the Albion 15. Urresti, fullback, plugged to the eight and another drive put the ball on the six as the quarter ended.
In the second quarter Urresti drove to the four, then to the one-yard line and then carried the oval across. The kick was blocked and sailed back over the booter's head.
Albion opened the second half by kicking to the junior college on the 15-yard line. A Bronco fumble was recovered by Ousterhout, Albion end, on the Bronco 10. Three drives put the ball on the two-yard line and from there Cooper dived over the goal. Gruell kicked the point, and Albion led, 7 to 6.
From then on until the last of the fourth quarter the game revolved into a puntning duel, with Albion's ball-hawks taking advantage of the breaks. The punting was always in Boise territory. Albion kicks rolled into the end zone a couple of times.
The junior college held for downs once on its own 27-yard marker as the third quarter ended. Early in the fourth, Albion recovered a fumble and tried to score from the Bronco 10-yard line, but lost on downs. In a few minutes Albion was again knocking at the door. One long pass went awry. Morgan, Bronco center, intercepted it and raced to the Albion 35. He was almost clear. The Broncos steadied, with victory in their grasp. Cantlin raced around end for a long gain, but was called back. He went to the Albion 30 on the next play. Urresti plunged to the Albion 15, only to be called back and penalized 15 yards, to the Albion 40. It was too much. Albion held, took the ball on downs and drove to the Boise 15 just as the game ended.
