Four Broncos Advance to Finals of the Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. Members of the Boise State University women’s tennis team advanced to the finals in all three flights of the Duck Invitational, hosted by the University of Oregon, in Eugene, Ore.

In the doubles flight, Jana Mackova and Laura Baum knocked off Oregon’s Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremeta 8-4 in the Round of 8 and then the Boise State duo dropped Melinda Wong and Allison Rainey of Washington 8-2, to advance to the finals while pushing their doubles record to 6-0 over the past two tournaments. 

In flight one of singles Saturday, Bianca Jochimsen collected two victories to qualify of the finals. In the Round of 8, Jochimsen defeated Portland’s Tanzer 6-1 and 6-4 before vanquishing Tara Simpson of Washington the following round in straight sets 6-2 and 6-2. With the win Jochimsen ran her record to a perfect 8-0 in singles over her last eight matches.

Stacey Housley advanced to the finals of flight two singles after she beat Davoudi of Santa Clara 6-3 and 6-3 before defeating Simone Templeton of Oregon 6-1 and 6-3. Housley is now 6-0 in singles play between the Boise State Invitational and the Duck Invitational.

Also collecting victories in singles play for the Broncos Saturday was Baum who earned a win over Santa Clara’s McBride 6-4 and 6-1 and Tatiana Ganzha who reached the semifinals by when she defeated Brymer of Washington 4-6, 6-4 and 7-5.

Entering play Saturday the Broncos carried a streak of 25 consecutive wins in singles play, and with the victories by Housley, Jochimsen, Baum and Ganzha, Boise State pushed their record to a perfect 29-0 over its last 29 matches before falling in a match to Oregon during the afternoon.

The finals of the Duck Invitational will be held at 9:00 a.m. (PT) on Nov. 12, 2006 at the Student Tennis Center.
