Bronco Cross Country Teams to Compete This Weekend

What’s Happening The Boise State University men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Salem, Ore., to compete in the 32nd Annual Charles Bowles Invitational, Sept. 30, at Bush’s Pasture Park.

The event, hosted by Willamette University, features four races with more than 1,200 athletes, beginning at 9:30 a.m. (PST). The Men’s eight-kilometer Cardinal Race, featuring teams from Division II and III, as well as NAIA schools, will begin at 9:30 a.m., while the women’s 5k Cardinal race begins at 10:10 a.m.

The Bronco men will be competing in the 8k Gold Race at 10:40 a.m., with teams from Division I, as well as junior colleges, club teams and unattached runners. The Bronco women will be running in the 5k Gold Race, beginning at 11:20 a.m.

“This is the first time this season that we are able to earn points towards the national championships,” cross country coach David Welsh said. “We are hoping for an excellent performance out of our runners to get a great start on reaching the NCAAs as a team.”

The Teams Division I teams running with the Broncos include Hawaii (women), Idaho, Oregon, Oregon State (women), Portland State, San Diego State (women), St. Mary’s, UC Davis, Portland, San Francisco, Texas, and Washington. The men’s teams from Oregon (No. 17), Portland (No. 8), and Texas (No. 6) are nationally ranked. On the women’s side, Washington (No. 10) is also ranked nationally.

Several junior colleges will also be running, including Bellevue CC, Clackamas CC, Clark College, Lane CC, Mt. Hood CC, San Diego Mesa CC, Spokane CC, Southwest Oregon CC, and Treasure Valley CC.

Last Time Out - Boise State University senior All-American Forest Braden led the Bronco cross country teams at the Sundodger Invitational, Sept. 16, finishing in second place individually.

Braden ran the eight-kilometer race in 23-minutes, 59-seconds, finishing 16-seconds behind men’s invitational champion Scotty Baughs of Chico State.

Fellow senior Ty Axtman, who recorded his first-career individual victory, Sept. 9, at the Hampton Inn and Suites Fall Harrier Classic, posted the only other top 20 finish for the Broncos at the event. Axtman finished 12th with a time of 24:29.

On the women’s side, sophomore Breanna Sande, who also recorded her first-career individual victory at the Fall Harrier Classic, led the Broncos with a six-kilometer time of 21:46, finishing 36th.
