The Athletes - Men
The men’s team returns only one upperclassman to the team that finished second at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championships. Senior and second-team All-WAC selection, Cody Eaton, leads a young squad that features a deep and talented group of runners.
Eaton led the men’s team to victory at the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Classic with 29 points as he recorded a first place finish on the 6,000-meter course with a 3:06.9. At the West Coast Preview he posted a 25:59.0 to finish 12th. Eaton was also earned WAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for his performance at the NNU Hampton Inn and Suites Classic.
Freshman Sawyer Bosch has recorded two top five finishes in the only two races of the season. At the Northwest Nazarene Hampton Inn and Suites Invitational he collected a third place finish with an 18:49.9 on the 6,000-meter course. Then at the West Coast preview he finished fifth with a 25:34.2 on the 8,000-meter course.
A fellow freshmen Kevin Higgs has recorded two top 10 finishes this season. He posted a fifth place with a 19:02.2 at the NNU Hampton Inn and Suite Classic and an eighth place finish with 25:43.1 at the West Coast Preview.
The Athletes - Women
The women’s cross country team returns second-team All-WAC performers in juniors Kendra Hernandez and Breanne Sande. The two juniors combined with seniors Meadow Braden and Chaly Jones will be relied upon to guide the young women’s team through the rigors of the cross country season as the team prepares for the 2007 WAC Championships.
Breanna Sande has posted two top five finishes in the opening two races. She won the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic with a 14:13.6 then finished fourth at the West Coast Preview with a 21:59.0.
Senior Chaly Jones has collected two top 10 finishes this season. She recorded a fifth place finish at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic and an eighth place finish at the West Coast Preview.
Graduate Assistant Interim Cross Country Coach Tom Shanahan - “Our main goal for this week is to tighten up gaps,” said Shanahan. “Cross country is just one of those sports where it’s hard. In the middle of the race, I don’t care how quick you are, how much ability you have, it is going to hurt somewhere. It is then the decision that you make are you willing to push through this?’”
