“The NNU Invitation is a good team builder and a good way for us to open the season,” graduate assistant track and field coach Tom Shanahan said. “We are really excited to be going there (NNU Invite). There are going to be some really good teams and we will definitely have some really strong competition.”
The Teams - The men’s and women’s teams will both be facing four teams on the course, Eastern Oregon,
The Broncos - “I am really excited about the team,” Shanahan said. “With the blend of senior leadership combined with some of the new talent coming in, I think if we can keep everyone health and get our team to gel we should be right there come October.”
The Athletes - Men
The men’s team returns only one upperclassman to the team that finished second at the 2006 Western Athletic Conference Championships. Senior and second-team All-WAC selection, Cody Eaton, leads a young squad that features a deep and talented group of runners.
“Cody is one of our team captains and he has had a very good summer,” Shanahan said. “He looks really good already so I think he is going to be a good team leader. For Cody it all starts at practice. He has had a couple of really nice practices so his confidence is high and I think he will be a frontrunner for us this year.”
The Athletes - Women
The women’s cross country team returns second-team All-WAC performers in juniors Kendra Hernandez and Breanne Sande. The two juniors combined with seniors Meadow Braden and Chaly Jones will be relied upon to guide the young women’s team through the rigors of the cross country season as the team prepares for the 2007 WAC Championships.
“Meadow has looked very good in the first two weeks of practice,” Shanahan said. “I think her leadership skills and her work ethic are a joy to watch. She will be a very important part of our team.”
“Chaly Jones had a great summer,” Shanahan said. “She has looked really good the last two weeks. Her work ethic has been great and I think she will be a huge contributing member.”
The Times - The women’s 4,000-meter race will begin at 10:00 a.m. (MT), while the men’s 6,000-meter race will begin at 10:45 a.m. (MT), Saturday.
