BOISE STATE BLANKS CAL POLY, 41-0, SWEEPS WEEKEND DUALS

            BOISE, Idaho The No. 10 ranked Boise State wrestling team (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA) completed a clean sweep of its weekend duals Saturday, with a 41-0 shutout of Cal Poly at Bronco Gymnasium. After defeating Cal State Fullerton 37-4 on Friday, the Broncos (13-3, 4-0 Pac-10 Conference) earned three major decisions, two wins by fall and one technical fall en route to a big win over the Mustangs (3-9, 0-4).

            The dual opened at 157-pounds with the most anticipated match of the night. No. 6 nationally ranked Adam Hall (USA Today/InterMat/NWCA) needed overtime to finally take down Cal Poly’s No. 14 ranked Chase Pami. After wrestling to a 4-4 tie through three periods, Hall scored a two-point take down with 00:01 showing on the clock to earn the 6-4 win.

            Boise State senior Tyler Sherfey (No. 19) extended the Broncos lead with a 12-3 major decision against Joel Shaw. With the win, Sherfey improves his overall record this season to 19-8, 11-4 in duals.

            Next, at 174-pounds, Nate Lee managed to grind out another hard fought match by Cal Poly’s Ryan DesRoches. Lee needed a two-point take down in the third period to finally put the match out of reach, 6-5. Lee, who entered this week ranked No. 16 nationally, is 11-3 this season and 9-1 in duals.

            Boise State would earn its two wins by fall at 184 and 197-pounds. No. 4 Kirk Smith pinned Evan Barbre at the 6:01 mark to earn the first win by fall of the night. Boise State sophomore Brent Chriswell (No. 5 ranked) followed suit with a first period pin (2:24) of Bo Lukehart to extend the Bronco lead, 22-0.

            In the heavyweight match Sam Zylstra wrestled to a 4-1 decision against Cal Poly’s Kelan Bragg. Then at 125-pounds, Boise State’s Alan Bartelli earned the second major decision of the night, defeating Josh Obregon 8-0. No. 4 ranked Andrew Hochstrasser pushed the Bronco lead to 34-0 by earning a 19-4 technical fall in the 133-pound match against Jake Tanenbaum.

            In the final two matches of the evening, Bronco senior Cory Fish earned a 12-2 major decision over David Christian. Jason Chamberlain completed the shutout for the Broncos with a 4-0 decision against Eric Maldonando in the 149-pound match.

            Boise State, which has won six of its last eight duals, will be off the mat for two weeks now. Their next dual will come against UC Davis on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Boise. The Broncos will conclude their home schedule one night later on Sunday, Feb. 8, against Stanford.
