BOISE STATE CONCLUDES NCAA TOURNAMENT WITH THREE TOP EIGHT FINISHES

ST. LOUIS, Mo. The Boise State wrestling team earned All-American honors in three weight classes, Saturday, by capturing three top-eight finishes at the NCAA National Wrestling Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Andrew Hochstrasser led the way for Boise State, placing fourth at 133-pounds. Brent Chriswell ended the tournament with a sixth-place finish in the 197-pound bracket, while Tyler Sherfey placed eighth at 165.

            Hochstrasser (35-5 overall, 19-3 tournament) opened the final day of competition with a rematch against Steve Bell of Maryland. He had already defeated Bell in the second round of the tournament, 9-2. Hochstrasser managed a 7-3 decision, Saturday, propelling him into the third-place match. His run through the consolation bracket would finally come to an end there, however, as he dropped a 14-6 major decision to Jayson Ness of Minnesota. Hochstrasser’s 4-2 record earned him a fourth-place finish and All-American honors.

            Chriswell (17-4, 7-3) also entered Saturday still in contention for a third-place finish in the consolation bracket. It was not to be, however, as Chriswell would drop both of his matches on the final day. The first loss came against Tyrel Todd of Michigan, 8-3, and the second against Maxwell Askren of Missouri, 3-0. Chriswell’s 4-3 tournament record earned him All-American honors and a sixth-place finish overall.

            Sherfey (30-11, 15-7) capped off a memorable career at Boise State with an eighth-place finish Saturday after losing to Missouri’s Nick Marable, 6-4, in the seventh-place match. Sherfey finished the tournament with a 4-3 record. He also earned All-American honors. Sherfey concludes his collegiate career with an overall record of 126-41, winning 75.5 percent of his matches at Boise State. He qualified for the NCAA Championships four times; twice at 149-pounds and once at 157 and 165.

            As a team, Boise State finished in 12th-place with 46.5 points.
