Broncos Selected to 2011 NCAA Denver Regional
3/21/2011 12:00:00 AM | Women's Gymnastics
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State gymnastics team learned Monday (March 21) afternoon that the NCAA has selected the Broncos to travel to Denver, Colo., for the 2011 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championship Regional meet.
The No. 13-ranked Broncos will take on No. 1-ranked Florida, No. 12-ranked Arkansas, No. 19-ranked Denver, No. 20-ranked Arizona and No. 27-ranked Brigham Young. The University of Denver will play host to one of six regional meets that will all be conducted Saturday, April 2, with start times between 4 and 6 p.m. local time. The Denver Regional is slated for a 6 p.m. (Mountain) start in Magness Arena.
Boise State was selected to start the six-rotation meet on the bye before floor, meaning they will have a bye in the first rotation and actually begin their competition in rotation two on floor. They will then continue on to vault, then a bye, then bars and end the meet on beam.
The Broncos return for their fourth-straight NCAA Regional meet, including four straight under co-head coaches Tina Bird and Neil Resnick. Their 2011 NCAA Regional meet invitation marks the 25th regional competition in Boise State gymnastics history. The highest regional finish ever by a Bronco team came in 2009 when they placed third. Last season the Broncos placed fourth at the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional, and qualified senior Hannah Redmon as an individual competitor for the NCAA National Championships on vault and floor.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six regions.
The top-18 teams were seeded on a national basis, based on RQS. Teams 19-36 were assigned to a regional site based on geographic proximity. All-around competitors and event specialists were assigned within their respective regions.
Other sites hosting regional meets include: Tuscaloosa, Ala. (University of Alabama); Corvallis, Ore. (Oregon State); Ann Arbor, Mich. (University of Michigan); Norman, Okla. (University of Oklahoma) and Athens, Ga. (University of Georgia).
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Cleveland, Ohio, April 15-17, hosted by Kent State University and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.
In addition, the event winners at each regional will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
