Boise State Falls in Home Finale to UNLV

3/7/2013 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Lenhardt scores 18 points in final game at Taco Bell Arena.

BOISE, Idaho - Lauren Lenhardt scored a team-high 18 points in her final home contest in Taco Bell Arena, but it was not enough to help the Broncos as they lost 70-60 to UNLV in a Mountain West women's basketball game at Boise. Boise State rallied from five down at the half to take a six-point lead twice by the 13 minute mark of second period, only to see UNLV slowly out pace the foul plagued Broncos down the stretch for the win.

Lenhardt scored 16 of her points in the second period as Boise State fell to 11-17 overall and 4-11 in league play. The Broncos will close the regular season this Saturday afternoon on the road at the two-time champion San Diego State Aztecs. Meanwhile, UNLV improved to 12-17 on the year and 8-7 in conference play.

On Senior Day in Taco Bell Arena, Lenhardt gave it her all to lead the team shooting 43.8 percent (7-16) from the floor with one 3-pointer and went a perfect three-for-three from the free-throw line. It was the Eagle, Idaho, native's 23 game out 28 contests in double figures this season and 69th in her career.

Three other Broncos reached double digit points as well led by Rosalie Cutri who just missed her first double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds to go with a team-high five assists and three steals. Brandi Henton finished with 11 points and five boards, followed by Lexie Der who did get the double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds, her third of the year.

UNLV was led by a two person wrecking crew of Rejane Verin who recorded a double-double on 26 points and 19 rebounds, followed by Kelli Thompson with 27 points and eight boards. The duo combined for 53 of the team's 70 points.

Neither team shot particularly well on the night. Boise State finished shooting 31 one percent (22-71) from the floor, 13.6 percent (3-22) from beyond the arc and 68.4 percent (13-19) from the foul line. UNLV countered at 35.1 percent (20-57) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-14) from 3-point range and 78.1 percent (25-32) from the free throw line. Amazingly, in the Broncos two games against UNLV this year the Rebels took a combined 76 free throws, making 55 of them.

The first half saw both teams struggle shooting the ball as they were tied at 17 with nearly four minutes to play in the period. UNLV surged late to finished the half on a 9-4 run to take a five-point advantage, 26-21, into the break.

Boise State opened the final 20 minutes on a 9-2 run to take a 30-28 lead three minutes into the period. The Broncos stretched their advantage to a game-high six points twice, the last came with 13:43 to play and the blue and orange up 41-35.

The Broncos held onto the lead for most of the next seven minutes when foul trouble began to mount and UNLV started to rally behind Kelli Thompson, the Mountain West scoring leader. She scored eight consecutive points capped by two free throws to give the Lady Rebels the lead for good with 6:09 to play up 52-51.

Lenhardt, Henton and Cutri all had four fouls by the 7:01 media break, Der had joined them by the next media timeout with 3:16 left. With the Broncos' leaders in danger of fouling out, the Rebels used the situation to their advantage to put the game away down the stretch by dominating the boards and out scoring Boise State 18-9 in the final six minutes of play.
