Williams-Rhodes Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

BOISE, Idaho -- Senior wide receiver Shane Williams-Rhodes was named to yet another watch list Wednesday morning for his achievements in academics, athletics and community service as the Wuerrfel Trophy unveiled its 80 candidates.
Williams-Rhodes was also named a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Tuesday. Last week he was also named to the preseason watch list for the Paul Hornung Award.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
The presentation of the 2015 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 47th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 12, 2016 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
On the field, Williams-Rhodes is a triple threat as a receiver, rusher and returner, leading Boise State last year in receptions (68) and touchdown catches (seven) while racking up 585 receiving yards and 179 on the ground. On special teams he averaged 8.5 yards over a team-high 18 punts returns.
The Spring, Texas native finished 2014 tied for second in the Mountain West with his seven touchdown grabs and his 68 catches ranked fourth. For his outstanding performance he was named All-Mountain West honorable mention for the second year in a row.
Williams-Rhodes enters the 2015 campaign fifth all-time at Boise State with 170 career receptions, and needs 75 to eclipse Matt Miller's (2011-14) school record of 244. In last year's opener against Ole Miss, Williams-Rhodes hauled in a career-best 14 passes, tying for the third-highest single-game total in school history. In 2013, he caught 77 passes, a figure that ranks fourth on Boise State's single-season list.
In the classroom, Williams-Rhodes is working towards his degree in marketing and has twice been named Academic All-Mountain West (2013-14).
Locally, Williams-Rhodes is one of the most requested Bronco players for community outreach, as he has an incredible bond with the Boise community. He is among the leaders on the team every semester in number of community service events and appearances, and is Boise State's primary speaker at grade school and junior high assemblies, stressing the strong message of setting goals, surrounding oneself with the right people and understanding the importance of academics.
Additionally, Williams-Rhodes mentors at-risk youth involved in the Boise-area Optimist Youth Football program, helping them not only with football skills, but self-confidence and life skills. Other outreach projects he has been a part of include: Go On Idaho, Operation Santa's Sleigh, Operation School Bell and Dr. Seuss Reading Month. All told, over the past three years, Williams-Rhodes has logged more than 100 hours of community outreach and service.
