BOISE, Idaho â€" Boise State linebacker Tanner Vallejo was named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced Friday.

Vallejo has twice earned All-Mountain West honors, being named honorable mention in 2015 after earning a spot on the second team in 2014.

Last year, he finished third on the team with 57 tackles (32 solo), tied for second with a pair of forced fumbles and tied for fourth with 8.0 tackles-for-loss over 12 games (10 starts). The campaign followed a 2014 performance in which he finished fifth in the Mountain West with 16.5 TFL and led the Broncos with 100 tackles (64 solo) and three fumble recoveries.

He was instrumental in Boise State's defensive effort in last season's 16-13 victory over Washington, leading the Broncos with seven tackles. Two weeks later, against Idaho State (Sept. 18), he blocked a punt and a field goal, earning himself Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week. In the regular-season finale at San Jose State, Vallejo led the team with nine tackles including a tackle-for-loss.

Vallejo is the fifth Bronco to be named to a preseason watch list in 2016, joining Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien (Maxwell Award), running back Jeremy McNichols (Maxwell Award), tight end Jake Roh (Mackey Award) and Tyler Rausa (Lou Groza Award).

Boise State opens the 2016 season Saturday, Sept. 3 at Louisiana. The Broncos' home opener is the following Saturday, Sept. 10, against Washington State.

The winner of the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be presented Dec. 5 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
