RENO, Nev. (AP) - In a game that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes, Boise State (16-4, 6-2) came up just short of earning a monster road win as Nevada (18-3, 7-0) made enough plays down the stretch to claim the 74-68 victory at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev., Saturday night.
Chandler Hutchison poured in 27 points for his fifth 25+ point game of the season, and his 11th 20+ point game of the season. The senior also tied a career high with four steals.
Chris Sengfelder picked up the eighth double-double of his career (second of the season) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Hobbs had another nice game off the bench in scoring 12 points for his 12th double-digit scoring game of the season (fifth in MW play).
Nevada erased a three-point deficit late in the second half with a jumper and 3-pointer from Caleb Martin to go up 65-63 with 3:36 to play. Boise State then tied it at 65 with Hutchison's jumper but was held to just three points over the final 2:50 as Nevada sealed it from the free throw line.
The Wolf Pack's Martin made 11 of 22 from the field, including four 3-pointers. Jordan Caroline finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds and Kendall Stephens added 11 points for Nevada, which has won 10 of its last 11 games.
Despite the loss, the Broncos' 16-4 record marks the best 20-game start to a season since the 1988-89 when the team also started 16-4. All four of Boise State's losses have come when giving up 70 or more points. The Broncos are now 5-4 in games where their opponent scores 70 or more.
Boise State will return to Taco Bell Arena and host San Jose State, Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. (MT). The game will broadcast on AT&T SportsNet.
