Broncos Come Up Short Against Colorado State

11/10/2018 6:13:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

BOISE, Idaho - Sabryn Roberts' 11th double-double on 12 kills and 11 digs led Boise State in a four set 25-14, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 loss to league-leading Colorado State Saturday afternoon in Bronco Gym. It was a match of runs, the last and decisive run was 13-0 by CSU midway through the fourth that put the contest away as the Rams rallied from 11-7 down to a 20-11 lead, a deficit that Boise State was unable to recover from.

"I like how we bounced back in the second set after a slow start in the first," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "Then the rest of the match was just really streaky. Colorado State streaked a little longer than we did. It wasn't a real pretty match, I don't think we ball-handled as well as we need to. So we'll get back to work in practice and try to pass a little better to give our setters some more options for the next match."

The defeat snaps a three-match win streak by the Broncos — who have now won six of their last eight matches — and moves them to 17-10 overall and 9-7 in Mountain West Conference play. Colorado State improved to 22-6 overall and 14-2 in conference play with one week remaining in the regular season.

Roberts added five blocks, one assist and one service ace to her team-highs for kills and digs. Fellow senior Morgan Hughes was also a impact for the blue and orange as she hit 35 percent for nine kills to go with one service ace, six digs and a team-high eight blocks. She now has an impressive 22 blocks combined in the last three matches for a 2.0 per set average.

Janell Walley finished hitting a team-best 37.5 percent for eight kills and tallied three assists, 10 digs and four blocks. Jessica Donahue followed up with 31.2 percent hitting for seven kills to go with two blocks.

Cassedi Simon dished out a team-high 31 assists from the setter position to go with two kills, four digs and three blocks. Jessie Brigham contributed 11 digs as the libero to tie for the team-high.

Boise State hit 16.7 percent as a team for 40 kills on 38 assists and had four service aces, 47 digs and 13 blocks. Colorado State countered by hitting 29.4 percent for 66 kills on 63 assists with four aces, 50 digs and seven blocks.

Colorado State stormed out to a 11-point win the opening set as the Broncos struggled early. In the second, Boise State came back and battled through 10 ties and three lead changes to claim the victory. The largest lead in the second was three points by the Broncos each time including the final victory margin.

The third set saw the Broncos sprint out to a 7-1 lead, only to see the Rams rally to tie the score at 11-11. Boise State regained its advantage and held it until a 16-16 tie when CSU surged into the lead for good, eventually taking the period 25-21.

The fourth mirrored the third, only this time Colorado State opened by taking a 6-1 lead early and Boise State rallied with an 8-0 run to go up 11-7. Roberts led the Bronco rally with three kills, while Cassedi Simon added two kills and a block assist. Unfortunately, the Rams regrouped following a timeout and rolled off a 13-0 run to suck the air out of the match by taking a commanding 20-11 lead and ended up winning the set by 10 to clinch the match.

Boise State will close the regular season this coming week when they host Utah State on Tuesday for Senior Night, followed by  a Thursday night road match at Air Force.
