BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's basketball added an exceptional talent, Wednesday, as head coach Leon Rice announced the signing of Raymond "RayJ" Dennis to a National Letter of Intent for the 2019-20 season. A point guard out of Oswego, Ill., Dennis is set to join the team next fall.
"RayJ is a playmaking point guard that Bronco fans are going to love," Rice said of Dennis. "He is a terrific scorer and an elite shooter. Rayj has an ability to see the court and with his feel for the game, he makes everyone better. He's a high character student-athlete with an exceptional work ethic. These skills coupled with our system will put him in a position to have a great career here at Boise State and beyond."
A three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, Dennis averaged 17.2 points, 4.9 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game last season at Oswego East, guiding the Wolves to a 20-8 record in 2017-18 – including an appearance in the IHSA Regional final. He also knocked down 66 3-pointers at a 39 percent clip as a junior.
"I chose Boise State because the love and interest they were showing me felt sincere," Dennis said on his signing. "When I visited Boise I loved everything about it. I love the coaching staff, campus and playing with the guys – I felt like it was an instant, perfect fit. I am looking forward to being a part of the grind with my brothers and teammates, and chasing after championships."
He was recognized on the all-area team along with earning Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 3A-4A Third-Team All-State honors for his efforts during the 2017-18 season.
"Boise State fans are getting a winner in RayJ Dennis," Oswego East HS head coach Ryan Velasquez said. "He is a silky-smooth guard that has an unbelievable work ethic along with a great skill set and feel for the game. His ability to score the ball and make others around him better is encouraging to see. Boise State fans are getting a true competitor in RayJ!"
On the AAU circuit Dennis most recently competed for Team Rose this past summer, where he went for a game-high 27 points at a tournament in mid-July.
Dennis will continue what has become a growing tradition of Chicago-based Bronco guards, as he will follow in the footsteps of Lexus Williams (2017-18) and Derrick Marks (2011-15).
