Former Bronco Troy Merritt Wins Second Career PGA Tour Event

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Former Boise State men's golfer Troy Merritt notched his second career PGA Tour victory with a dominant showing at the Barbasol Championship, Monday morning. Merritt – who competed for the Broncos for two seasons from 2006-08 – shot 265 (62-67-69-67, -23) through all four rounds for a single-stroke victory.
The victory gives Merritt, who still lives in Meridian, Idaho, a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour through the 2019-20 season, and a spot in next month's PGA Championship, Aug. 9-12, at Bellerive Golf Course.
This is his first victory on the PGA Tour since winning the Quicken Loans National in 2015.
"It's so hard to win on the PGA Tour," said Merritt following his victory. "After that win in 2015, I didn't play very well the last couple years. You're always asking yourself, is this the time to move on? To get a win this late in the season and move up to 65 on the points list and secure a job for two more years, it's a pretty good feeling."
It was a dominant weekend for Merritt, as his 10-under 62 in the first round set a new course record at the Keene Trace Golf Club. His first round kept him in contention for the entire weekend, and put him in a four-way tie for first place entering the final round. Merritt shot 5-under 67 in the final round to give him the victory.
"It was a great week. No complaints out of me this week," Merritt said. "To do it in the first round and then keep the momentum going to Friday, Saturday, and Monday seeing how I didn't hit a shot yesterday, was pretty good. We did a great job of taking it one shot at a time."
The victory Monday moved Merritt up to 65th on the FedExCup standings, shy of his highest ranking of 65 he achieved in 2015. This was his 10th career top 10 finish on the PGA Tour, as well.
