BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's head golf coach Dan Potter concluded this year's recruiting class with the addition of Hugo Townsend (Boden, Sweden), he announced Tuesday. Townsend will join incoming freshman Cameron Barzekoff (Mesa, Ariz.) and junior transfer Michael Rizzo (Brantford, Ontario/Texas-Rio Grande Valley) as new additions for the Broncos next season.
Townsend – a native of Dublin, Ireland – was a member of the Swedish National Boys team in 2016-18, helping lead the team to a fourth-place finish in the European Boys Team Championship in La Manga, Spain in the summer of 2017.
The son of Peter Townsend, a nine-time victor on the European Tour and a member of Europe's Ryder Cup team in 1968 and 1971 – Hugo won 16 junior tournaments and added 11 runner-up finishes between 2010-17. The younger Townsend was the top ranked player in Sweden in his age group from 2012-15.
In addition to finishing eighth at the U21 Swedish Amateur Stroke Play in June, Townsend has been ranked as high as 1221 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
"Hugo is going to be a great fit for our program. He has experience playing at a high level around the world, and he has a fantastic feel for the game," Potter said. "He has a very mature disposition and will fit well among the guys on our team. Hugo is going to be a long way from home, so I can't wait for him to be welcomed by the many friends and supporters of our program. He's going to have a chance to make an immediate impact."
Townsend's addition rounds out a recruiting class that enters Boise State with impressive credentials. Barzekoff – a top 50 recruit in the Class of 2018 rankings recently qualified to play in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship later this summer at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey. Barzekoff also won the Rocky Mountain Junior Tour- Tournament of Champions this past December, shooting rounds of 67-65-73 to win by eight strokes.
Rizzo will join the Broncos with two seasons of eligibility remaining after beginning his collegiate career at Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Last month, Rizzo reached the quarterfinal of the Ontario (Canada) Men's Match Play Championship. He'll compete at the prestigious Porter Cup later this month at Niagara Falls Country Club in New York, after earning one of eight qualifying spots.
On the addition of Rizzo, Potter said, "Michael Rizzo comes in as a proven Division I performer. He has an elite golf swing and is a superb ball striker. He is eager to make the most of his time as a Bronco."
"I am excited about all three of these players. They are great guys who will represent themselves and Bronco Nation well. All three young men come from completely unique backgrounds and possess different strengths. I am humbled that they have chosen Boise State as the next step in their path and I hope this will be the best decision they could have possibly made for themselves and their families."
