Freshman Lauren Ohlinger recorded a double-double on 19 kills and 10 digs to lead Boise State to win over the Bengals.
BOISE, Idaho - Lauren Ohlinger's double-double on a career-high 19 kills to go with 10 digs led Boise State to a sweep over instate-rival Idaho State in the Broncos home opener Thursday night. Boise State hit an impressive 38.6 percent — second best match for hitting on the season — on its way to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) victory over the Bengals, who were held to 15.6 percent hitting.Â
The Broncos' victory in the Boise State Classic opener improved them to 7-3 overall with an encounter versus UC Irvine on the slate for 2 p.m. Saturday to close the tournament. Idaho State and UC Irvine will play 2 p.m. Friday in Bronco Gym.Â
"I thought we had a little nervous energy at the start, so we had a little up and down play tonight," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "Our service line was inconsistent tonight, but overall I think we played with some aggression at the net and we were the better offensive team tonight. I thought Dani Boss did a really nice job running the offense, and freshman Lauren Ohlinger in her first match in Bronco Gym was outstanding."
The Blue and Orange struggled early in the match as the rival Bengals hung with them in a tight opening set. Boise State pulled away late to win it by four points, which proved to be the closest set of the night.
The Broncos hit the ball well all night finishing set one at a match-low 30.8 percent, then bumped it up in the final two periods hitting 48.1 percent and 40 percent, respectively.Â
Ohlinger was solid on the night, not only did she finish with a career-high in kills she hit a season-high 67.9 percent on 19 kills and no errors on 28 attacks. She ended up with a team-high 21.0 points against the Bengals.
Sophomore Jessica Donahue followed hitting a season-high 47.1 percent with 10 kills — the only other Bronco in double-figure kills — to go with a team-high five block assists. Â
Janell Walley was the focus of ISU's defense as they held her to five kills, she added 11 digs and three block assists.Â
Idaho State was led by Duquesne Moratzke with 11 kills and three blocks.
