The Boise State women's tennis team has announced the signing of Shauna Heffernan of Claremorris, Ireland for the fall 2020 campaign.

BOISE, Idaho –Boise State's head women's tennis coach Beck Roghaar announced today the signing of Irish prep standout Shauna Heffernan who will join the team next fall.

"I chose Boise State because it has everything I want in a college, both athletically and academically," said Heffernan. "I am so excited about going there in August because I know it's the perfect fit for me."

"It was very apparent very quickly that Shauna is someone we really wanted to be a part of our program," said Roghaar. "The way she approaches every aspect of being a tennis player is top notch. Her competitiveness and mentality on court, the attention she pays to detail in her preparation and recovery, and how much she truly loves the sport set her apart from others and showed us she'll be a great fit here at Boise State in our culture."

Heffernan will come to Boise after an excellent prep career in her home country. She held the number one ranking for national singles and national doubles while also being a two-time U18 National Indoor Champion and winning the National Spring Championship U18 competition as well.

The Irishwoman also stood out on the international stage, winning two ITF Titles – J4 in Tunisia and J5 in Cairo – and winning the Capital Inn Reykjavik Open U16 tournament in Iceland while still a U14 herself. Heffernan was also selected to the Ireland Fed Cup Team, a prestigious honor in Irish prep tennis.

Heffernan stated her excitement to be playing on a team at Boise State, something many tennis players do not experience before the collegiate level. "I can't wait to be in a team atmosphere because I feel like it can bring out the best in me," said Heffernan. "They [coaches Roghaar and Maria Lopez] are building an incredible team culture and I'm delighted that I will be part of it."

Roghaar believes the new addition will be able to contribute to the team immediately. In addition to being a left-handed player, Roghaar describes her as "an extremely gifted athlete" who can play a versatile style of tennis. "She's very difficult to match up against because she can do so many different things out there," Roghaar said. "When you couple that with her mindset and attitude on court we know the future holds great things for her as a Bronco."
