BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State gymnastics team recorded four event titles against 15th-ranked BYU Friday at ExtraMile Arena, but ultimately dropped its first home meet of the season, 196.100-194.450.
Juniors Gabriela Bouza (vault), Tatum Bruden (floor) and Emily Muhlenhaupt (bars), and senior Isabella Amado (beam) each either tied or claimed outright titles against the Cougars.
Bouza registered a career-high-tying 9.850 en route to her second-straight vault title, while Muhlenhaupt picked up her third-consecutive victory on bars (9.925). Amado recorded her highest beam score of the season (9.900), winning her second beam title of the year and the third of her career.
For Bruden, her 9.850 on floor earned her the first individual title of her career in any event.
Despite the individual efforts, the loss to MRGC rival BYU (6-2, 5-0 MRGC) dropped the Broncos to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference meets.
"I thought we made a lot of improvements this week," head coach Tina Bird said. "But we still have a lot of work to do.
"I thought Emily was amazing on bars once again, and in her first year competing on beam, to post the score that she did was outstanding – especially considering the pressure that was on her."
Muhlenhaupt earned a 9.875 on beam from the judges, tying her career best. She finished second on the evening, just behind Amado, as the Broncos recorded a 48.525.
Tessa Otuafi, making her first appearance in the line-up in more than two years, set a career high on vault (9.775). Bouza and redshirt junior Maddi Nilson (9.750) each also tied their career highs in the event, as the Broncos combined for a 48.775.
Behind Muhlenhaupt, who ranks third nationally on bars, the Broncos registered an evening-best 48.950. The score was just shy of the team's season average (49.092), which ranks tied for 13th in the country.
The Broncos scored a 48.200 on floor, as BYU swept all four events.
Following its first home meet through the first four weeks of the season, Boise State will hit the road once again, traveling to Logan, Utah, for another MRGC showdown against Utah State. The Broncos and Aggies are slated to compete Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m.
