BOISE, Idaho – Despite the ever-changing 2020-21 academic year, Boise State Athletics and its Mountain West peers continue to seek ways to expand the personal and career development opportunities offered to student-athletes. One such initiative is a three-part seminar, hosted by the Mountain West Conference, geared toward student-athletes who wish to pursue a career in college athletics: Developing Future Leaders in Collegiate Sports.

No department is more involved than Boise State, which boasts a league-best seven student-athletes participating – each was selected after an application process – two staff members serving as guest speakers and one senior administrator who pioneered the initiative.

The program, devised by Christina Van Tol and her fellow Senior Woman Administrators around the league, provides student-athletes insight into six key areas of college athletic departments; the jobs within those areas; and the roles those positions play in advancing athletics at an institution.

Interested student-athletes from around the Mountain West submitted applications, which included a personal statement regarding their interest in a future career in athletics. Seven current Broncos were chosen to take advantage of the opportunity: Kelsey Lalor, Erin Martin, Hope Masiado, Cory Meyer, Riccardo Mugnosso, Malia Pivec and Lauren Sale.

"The conference was put together to cover any and all portions of working in athletics," Pivec said while discussing her involvement in the program Thursday, on The Bronco Tailgate Show, the Boise State football pregame radio show. "I put together a personal statement that described my involvement in athletics thus far and my short- and long-term goals. Ultimately I would love to be an athletic director."

Each of the three virtual meetings covers two areas: one external-facing group and one internal-facing group. The series opener, hosted Oct. 21, focused on communications and creative services, as well as student-athlete success, such as academics, compliance and leadership or advocacy groups. The second meeting touched on marketing and corporate sales, followed by student-athlete wellness, which included athletic training, strength and conditioning, nutrition and mental health.

Two widely-respected Boise State staff members served as mentors during the first two sessions. Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development Sara Swanson provided expertise on student-athlete success areas. Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance, Health and Wellness Marc Paul led the discussion on student-athlete wellness.

"We are very fortunate that we have great staff here on hand," said Pivec, who is also the president of Boise State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. "They have been very supportive and instrumental in my development and knowledge of not only the sports industry, but also preparing me for life after sports."

The series concludes next week with two more topics: development and administration, including finance, human resources, facilities and operations.
