BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State football team, ranked Nos. 21 and 23 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls, respectively, will play host to BYU – ranked No. 9 in each – Friday (Nov. 6) in the Broncos' lone nonconference game of the 2020 season. Kickoff is slated for 7:45 p.m., and the game will be nationally televised by FS1.
WINNINGEST PROGRAM
With its season-opening victory, Boise State took over as the winningest program in college football history (by winning percentage). The Broncos are now 462-170-2 (.7303) all-time, edging Ohio State (926-326-53; .7299) for the top spot. Notre Dame (914-326-42; .7293) is third all-time.
THE SERIES
Despite being just 380 miles apart, Saturday's meeting is just the 11th all-time between Boise State and BYU. This week's game is also the ninth of a 12-year series that began in 2012 and will end in 2023. The schools announced a series extension last season – after a one-year hiatus in 2024, the rivalry will resume in Boise in 2025 for the first of a 10-year scheduling home-and-home agreement.
The Broncos are 7-3 against the Cougars all-time, and a perfect 5-0 at home.
IN THE RANKINGS
Boise State moved up to No. 21 (from No. 25) in this week's Associated Press Poll, and made its 2020 debut – at No. 23 – in the Coaches Poll. BYU, checking in at No. 9 in each poll, is the highest-ranked team to visit Albertsons Stadium during the Broncos' FBS era (since 1996). Utah State was ranked No. 14 nationally when it visited Boise State in 2018 - previously the highest-ranked opponent at Albertsons Stadium - and the Broncos earned a 33-24 victory. Prior to the Aggies, the previous high was No. 16 – Oregon in 2009 and Fresno State in 2018 – and both the Ducks and Bulldogs were also sent packing with a loss.
Boise State is 5-3 at home against ranked opponents during its FBS era, and 15-18 all-time, regardless of location. Against top-10 opponents, Boise State is 5-2 and has won each of its last four such match-ups – No. 7 Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl (43-42, OT), No. 4 TCU in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl (17-10), No. 10 Virgin-ia Tech in 2010 (33-30) and No. 10
Arizona in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl (38-30).
NON-SATURDAY GAMES
Friday's game against BYU is the first of three non-Saturday games for the Broncos in 2020, and will be followed next week with a Thursday match-up against Colorado State (Nov. 12). This is the first time in school history that Boise State has gone Saturday to Friday to Thursday in consecutive weeks, losing a day of preparation
for back-to-back games.
Boise State is 61-17 all-time in non-Saturday games, including a record of 36-11 on Fridays. During the regular season, Boise State is 53-11 in non-Saturday contests, and 36-9 on Fridays.
Of the Broncos' previous 10 games against the Cougars, only three have been played on Saturday.
SETTLE IT BEFORE SATURDAY
Boise State and BYU have met every year since 2012, and, including this Friday's clash, six of the nine meetings have taken place on a week night. The Broncos and Cougars have met twice on a Thursday night (2012, 2016), while this year's contest will mark the fourth between the teams on a Friday (2013, 2014, 2017, 2020). The common denominator of these week-night battles? Boise State has won all five heading into this Friday night.
