ABOUT THE COUGARS: Houston is ranked in both preseason polls for the first time since 1983, checking in at No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll. The Cougars, the two-time defending American Athletic Conference regular-season champions, opened their 2020-21 campaign Wednesday with an 89-45 win against Lamar. Sophomore guard Caleb Mills was voted the Preseason AAC Player of the Year after leading Houston in scoring as a freshman.
SERIES HISTORY: Boise State leads the all-time series with Houston, 1-0. The Broncos knocked off the Cougars at the 2014 Las Vegas Classic, 75-73 in overtime. Igor Hadziomerovic's steal and layup with 45 seconds left in the extra period sealed the win. Hadziomerovic finished with 11 points, one of five Broncos in double figures for the game. Boise State went on to win the Mountain West regular-season crown that season.
HIGH-PROFILE OPENER: Boise State will take on a nationally-ranked opponent in its season opener for the first time since 2000, and just the third time in program history. The Broncos traveled to No. 17 Cincinnati Nov. 18, 2000, to start the 2000-01 campaign, which was immediately followed by a trip to No. 4 Kansas two days later. The other instance came Nov. 24, 1976, when Boise State's 1976-77 season began at No. 2 UCLA. Friday marks the 34th game against a top-25 opponent in Leon Rice's tenure as head coach. Prior to Rice's arrival, the Broncos played 30 ranked teams in the first 42 years of the program's history as a four-year institution.
REVISED SCHEDULE: For this season, the Mountain West adopted a 20-game league schedule which features teams playing each other in two-game series at the same location. Each institution will have five home and five road series. The move reduces travel to help mitigate potential virus exposures. The schedule is a one-year model adopted to specifically address the unique challenges of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
LATE START: Boise State's season opener on Nov. 27 is the latest the Broncos have debuted since the 1992-93 campaign, which featured a start date of Dec. 1. The team's first home game is slated for Dec. 3, the latest home opener since 1995 (Dec. 7). The home opener is against Mountain West foe New Mexico, which will make it the earliest conference game in program history.
400 CLUB, AGAIN: Derrick Alston, Jr. reached the 400-point plateau for the second consecutive year in 2019-20. Alston has scored 995 points over the last two seasons, tallying 554 as a junior and 441 points as a sophomore. He is seeking to become the eighth Bronco in program history to score at least 400 points in three different seasons.
