BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State gymnastics team is rounding into form as it nears the end of the regular season, posting its highest score of 2020 Thursday at ExtraMile Arena while upsetting 21st-ranked Southern Utah, 196.925-195.300.
The Broncos, which improved to 5-6-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference, claimed meet titles in all four events, and sophomore Hope Masiado recorded her second-straight all-around victory with a career-best 39.250.
Senior team captain Isabella Amado grabbed a share of both the beam and floor titles, junior Emily Muhlenhaupt was victorious on bars and junior Tatum Bruden and sophomore Samantha Smith combined for the honors on vault.
Southern Utah dropped to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in the MRGC.
"I'm incredibly excited to see this team start to show what it's capable of," head coach Tina Bird said. "They attacked their routines and stuck a ton of landings, which is critical for us. Izzy had a phenomenal night, as did our junior class."
For only the second time this season – but the second time in the last three meets – Boise State recorded scores of at least 49.000 in all four events. Included was a season-high 49.225 on vault to start the evening. The Broncos followed with scores of 49.300 on bars, 49.100 on beam and 49.300 on floor.
The vault line-up was led by Bruden and Smith, who matched and set their career highs (9.875), respectively, en route to the first titles of their careers in the event. Redshirt sophomore Tessa Otuafi also established a career best against the Thunderbirds (9.825).
For Bruden, the vault performance was a sign of things to come, as she also tied her career high on bars (9.875) and recorded her first 9.900 – in any event – on floor.
Muhlenhaupt once again posted the highest score of the evening, a feat she has accomplished seven times this season, earning a 9.950 on bars. The near-perfect routine led to her seventh title of the year, a mark that ranks tied for third place with Anne Staker (1991) on Boise State's all-time single-season list.
Amado's 9.875 on beam gave her a fourth-career title. She then followed with a 9.925 on floor, the highest such score for any current member of the team, to pick up her first-career victory in the event.
Sophomore Alexis Stokes set a career best with a 9.825 on beam, and Masiado recorded a career-high 9.825 on floor.
The Broncos' team total against the Thunderbirds will increase its National Qualifying Score to 195.790, a mark that would have ranked 26th nationally entering this week. The top 36 teams, based on NQS, receive automatic bids to the NCAA Regional Championships.
Boise State will close the regular season at home next week against 24th-ranked Arizona, the Broncos' seventh meet against a top-25 opponent this season. The Broncos and Wildcats are slated to begin their meet at 7 p.m., March 13 (Friday).
