BOISE, Idaho – Boise State men's golf student-athlete Hugo Townsend has been invited to participate in the 120th Annual U.S. Amateur.
The Boden, Sweden native earned his spot based on World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) where he is No. 385 out of over 6,600 golfers on the list.
The event is scheduled for August 10-16 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore. Both Bandon Dunes (7,218 yards, par 72) and Bandon Trails (6,883 yards, par 71) will be used in the competition.
The field is usually 312 competitors, but this year it has been reduced to 264. Stroke play will take place August 10 and 11 with the top 64 players advancing to match play beginning August 12.
Townsend captured the 2020 Idaho State Amateur when he erased a three-stroke deficit over the last-seven holes in the final round, July 25. In two years with the Broncos, he owns a 72.06 stroke average, competing in 18 events.
Past champions of the U.S. Amateur include Bobby Jones, Justin Leonard, Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.
This year's field includes defending champion Andy Ogletree (Georgia Tech graduate) and 2019 runner-up John Augenstein (Vanderbilt senior).
