BOISE, Idaho – Spencer Danielson has been named the Boise State football team's defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, head football coach Andy Avalos announced, Tuesday.
"Spencer is a man of faith, he is one of the best leaders Boise State has been fortunate to have and his engagement and impact with our student-athletes stretches beyond the university and into the community," Avalos said. "He is someone I've watched grow in this profession – both from afar and up close – and I know he is more than ready for this opportunity. We are excited to see our innovating and relentless defense."
Danielson has been on the Broncos' staff since 2017, including the last two as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.
"I am so fired up to continue to be part of this brotherhood, and to work directly with Andy Avalos, someone who has taught me so much and been one of my greatest mentors, and someone that I look up to as a leader of young men," Danielson said. "When Boise State has been at its best, we've had dominant defenses, and I can't wait to continue building on past successes toward a bright future."
He began his Boise State coaching career as a graduate assistant working with the Broncos' STUD position, before being promoted to a full-time role overseeing the same position in 2018.
In 2017, Curtis Weaver was named All-Mountain West First Team, the first freshman defensive player in conference history to earn the honor. Jabril Frazier was a second-team selection that season and the duo combined for 17 of Boise State's 34 sacks. Weaver led all freshmen nationally with 11 and tied for sixth in the NCAA overall.
Weaver repeated as an All-MW First Team member in 2018 after recording 9.5 sacks. In 2019, Weaver and Frazier each ranked in the top 10 in the Mountain West in sacks as the Broncos captured the league title. The duo contributed to Boise State 3.00 per game, which ranked 10th nationally.
Weaver earned nine All-America honors and was the MW Defensive Player of the Year. He was selected in the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.
The 2020 season saw the Broncos record 18 sacks in a seven-game season, including a half dozen by newcomer defensive end Shane Irwin.
Prior to joining Boise State, Danielson spent the 2013-16 seasons coaching at his alma mater, Azusa Pacific. He coached linebackers for his final three seasons and was the recruiting coordinator in 2016.
He was one of 30 coaches selected from nearly 200 applicants for the inaugural American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 30 Under 30 Coaches' Leadership Institute as the 2016 AFCA Convention, participating in focused, interactive lectures on topics including ethics, financial management, hiring and public safety, leadership and NCAA rules.
As a student-athlete, Danielson registered 190 tackles, including 12.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks and five interceptions at Azusa Pacific (2009-12). A native of Solano Beach, Calif., he graduated in 2012 with a degree in business administration and earned his MBA from Azusa Pacific in 2013.
He and his wife Raechel (Jones), a former Azusa Pacific volleyball student-athlete, were married in 2015. The couple welcomed their first child, Eleanor Rae in December 2020.
