FINAL RESULTS

BOISE, Idaho –
The Boise State gymnastics team, ranked No. 25 in Road to Nationals, picked up its second-straight top-15 upset to start the 2021 season Saturday, knocking off Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference rival and 14th-ranked BYU at ExtraMile Arena, 196.325-196.250, Saturday.

The Broncos opened the year at No. 13 Oregon State (Jan. 15), winning the season-opening meet, 194.300-191.950.

"Our goal was to build on our last meet, which we did in all four events," head coach Tina Bird said. "I was really proud of our improvement tonight, especially on floor. We got a little bit of our depth back, and it was nice to see the improvement."

Boise State (2-0, 1-0 MRGC) entered the final rotation trailing by 0.150, and initially looked like it would come up just short in the final standings. However, a video review overturned a deduction for an out of bounds for redshirt senior Maddi Nilson during her floor routine, and the adjusted score put the Broncos in front of the Cougars (2-3, 2-1 MRGC), securing the upset.

It was the Broncos' first victory over BYU since winning their fifth-straight MRGC Championship in Provo, Utah, March 22, 2019.

With the score correction, Nilson claimed a share of her first-career floor title with a career-high 9.875. She also registered a career high on vault with a 9.800.

Senior Emily Muhlenhaupt picked up her second-straight bars victory to open the season. Following another 9.950, Muhlenhaupt now has 11-career victories in the event, tied for ninth on Boise State's all-time list (Diana Mejia; 2014-17).

Boise State, which entered the evening ranked No. 25 in Road to Nationals, improved on last week's scores in all four events. The Broncos already boasted the nation's sixth-ranked bars line-up and ranked No. 12 nationally on beam entering tonight.

Freshman Courtney Blackson made her Bronco debut, leading Boise State on vault (9.850).

"Courtney saw her first action as a Bronco tonight, and while I was proud of her performance, I'm looking forward to seeing her start to throw her upgraded vault here very soon."

Four Broncos tied for the team high on beam at 9.825 – freshman Emily Lopez, sophomores Adriana Popp and Erin Elkabchi and Muhlenhaupt.

Boise State will hit the road for another MRGC showdown next week, traveling to Cedar City, Utah, to square off against No. 19 Southern Utah. The Broncos and Thunderbirds are slated to begin their dual meet at 7 p.m.
