Broncos advance three teams to Barb Chandler Classic semifinals

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women's tennis had a solid opening day at the Barb Chandler Classic on Friday as three of the Broncos four teams advanced to Saturday's semifinals. Leading the way for the Blue and Orange were the teams of Holly Stewart and Ana Conde Vendrell, as well as Joana Baptista and Pauline Ernstberger who advanced with wins in the Blue Flight, while Nicole Discenza and Bhakti Shah won in the Orange Flight.

The Barb Chandler Classic features a unique format where participants compete in pairs/doubles teams throughout the tournament. Each contest features one doubles and two singles matches with the winner of the best of three points advancing.

"Overall, I think today was a solid start for us. We definitely saw some improvement from last weekend," said head coach Beck Roghaar. "We want to continue to play ourselves deep into the tournament. I see the team playing even better tennis and competing at our best tomorrow. I was really pleased that we advanced a lot of our teams and won a lot of matches, we're hungry for more of that tomorrow."

In the Blue Flight, Stewart and Conde Vendrell faced a duo from Montana State in Marta Garcia Reboredo and Andrea Cuquerella. The Boise State tandem swept the Bobcat team 3-0, beginning with a dominating doubles victory 6-1. Then in singles, Stewart beat Reboredo in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 while Conde Vendrell also won in two sets with a solid 6-2, 6-2 victory.

"I definitely think that Holly and Ana did some really good things out there today," said Roghaar. "The started solid in their doubles match, then carried that momentum into singles. We made some small adjustments during practice this week and I saw that work come out today in their success."

Baptista and Ernstberger were equally impressive as Stewart and Conde Vendrell, sweeping their match 3-0 over Maria Villarejo and Mirte Van Baelen from Montana State. The Boise State pair cruised to a 6-2 doubles victory, then followed with two straight-set singles wins. Baptista rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Villarejo, while Ernstberger downed Van Baelen 6-2, 7-5 to complete the sweep.

Discenza and Shah made it three sweeps for the Broncos as they advanced with a win over Idaho's Saffron Dowse and Jayanne Palma. The doubles match was tight as the Vandal duo attempted to rally for the win, but was denied by a determined Discenza and Shah who held on for 7-5 victory. Like the other two matches the Broncos claimed both singles contests in straight sets. Shah dispatched Dowse 6-2, 6-4, followed by Discenza battling to a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Palma.

The action continues throughout the weekend starting at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at the Appleton tennis Center.
