BOISE, Idaho – Boise State fifth-year senior defensive back Kekaula Kaniho received an invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, while senior wide receiver Khalil Shakir was invited to the Reese's Senior Bowl, it was announced Thursday.

The Reese's Senior Bowl is the nation's most prestigious college all-star game, as it annually serves as the first step of the NFL Draft process.

Founded in 2012, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl gives prospective players the best opportunity to showcase their talents to potential employers and fans. Nearly 200 scouts, player personnel staff, general managers and head coaches from all 32 NFL teams are expected to be in attendance to watch live practices, conduct player interviews and review tape.

Kaniho returned in 2021 for a fifth year with the Broncos. In his career, he has registered 209 tackles, including 24.5 for-loss (five sacks), six interceptions, 30 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

He notched a career-best seven solo tackles against Oklahoma State (Sept. 18) and had two TFL, his most since Oct. 5, 2019, at UNLV.

The Kahuku, Hawaii, native has scored touchdowns via interception return, fumble return and punt return in his career. He is a two-time All-Mountain West performer, including a first-team honoree in 2019 and was named a semifinalist for the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy.

The defensive back was the FBS Senior CLASS Award winner and a CoSIDA Academic All-American last season and was selected to the 2021 Preseason All-MW Football Team.

Kaniho is the third Bronco in the past two seasons to receive an invitation to the coveted postseason game, as current NFL players John Bates (Washington Football Team) and Avery Williams (Atlanta Falcons) were both on the 2021 roster.

The 10th edition of the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl will be held at historic Rose Bowl Stadium and is slated to air on the NFL Network, Jan. 29, 2022.

The 2021 NFL Draft featured 106 players drafted from the Reese's Senior Bowl, representing 41 percent of the draft. Additionally, 36 Senior Bowl participants were selected in the draft's first three rounds.

Through the first 10 games of the 2021 season, Shakir has notched career highs in receptions (64) and receiving yards (926), and his 13-consecutive games with at least 65 yards receiving are the second-longest active streak nationally.

He recorded six receptions for 161 yards in the first half against UTEP (Sept. 10), the most yards receiving by intermission since Sean Modster also had six catches for 161 yards at Troy (Sept. 1, 2018).

In 2020, Shakir recorded 52 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns. He added 148 rushing yards and was one of only two players nationally with 700 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing. He was a PFF Honorable Mention All-American and All-Mountain West First Team honoree who led the Mountain West (10th nationally) with 7.43 receptions per game.

The Murrieta, Calif., native ranks sixth all-time at Boise State in career receptions (195) and seventh in career 100-yard games (nine). He also moved into seventh in reception yards after garnering 83 against Wyoming (Nov. 12) to raise his career total to 2,688, passing current Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Cedrick Wilson.

Shakir is the 14th Bronco in program history to be selected for the prominent postseason game, and the first Boise State player to participate since Wilson did so in 2018.

The 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 5 at 12:30 p.m. MT in Mobile, Ala., and will be televised on the NFL Network.
