BOISE, Idaho – Five Boise State football student-athletes were named to the NCAA Division I CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced.

The 2021 Academic All-District Football Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom.

The Broncos' five selections are the most among all institutions in District 7, which represents NCAA Division I programs from Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Additionally, Boise State boasts the most honorees in the Mountain West, as only six student-athletes from the other 11 MW schools combined etched their names on an all-district team.

Fifth-year senior defensive back Kekaula Kaniho (3.96, health science) earned the honor for the third-straight year, while fifth-year senior Riley Whimpey (3.82, business) was recognized for the second-consecutive year. Both Kaniho and Whimpey were named 2020-21 Academic All-Americans.

Also earning the honor for the second-straight year is sixth-year offensive lineman Donte Harrington (3.95/3.95, public administration) and senior wide receiver Khalil Shakir (3.37, communication), while junior quarterback Hank Bachmeier (5.57, business) is a first-time recipient.

Kaniho returned in 2021 for a fifth year with the Broncos. In his career, he has registered 209 tackles, including 24.5 for-loss (five sacks), six interceptions, 30 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

He notched a career-best seven solo tackles against Oklahoma State (Sept. 18) and had two TFL, his most since Oct. 5, 2019, at UNLV.

He is a two-time All-Mountain West performer, including a first-team honoree in 2019, and was named a semifinalist for the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy. The defensive back was the FBS Senior CLASS Award winner and was selected to the 2021 Preseason All-MW Football Team.

Whimpey's 62 tackles, including 38 solo, is the second most at Boise State this season.

Against Oklahoma State (Sept. 18), he forced a fumble for the first time since the 2019 season-opening win over Florida State and registered a career-high seven solo tackles against Air Force (Oct. 16). He also recorded his sixth-career sack and first of the season at Fresno State (Nov. 6).

The San Clemente, Calif., native was named a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy and a 2021 Football Senior CLASS Award Candidate.

Harrington has played in nine games, making four starts, so far this season and was named a 2021 preseason candidate for the AFCA Good Works Team for his extra efforts made in the community.

Shakir has notched career highs in receptions (64) and receiving yards (926), through the first 10 games of the season and his 13-consecutive games with at least 65 yards receiving are the second-longest active streak nationally.

The Murrieta, Calif., native ranks sixth all-time at Boise State in career receptions (195) and seventh in career 100-yard games (nine). He also moved into seventh in reception yards after garnering 83 against Wyoming (Nov. 12) to raise his career total to 2,688, passing current Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Cedrick Wilson.

Bachmeier became the 13th quarterback in school history to reach 4,000-career yards passing after finishing 23-for-34 for 388 yards against Oklahoma State (Sept. 18).

His 19-career games with at least 200 yards passing ranks seventh all-time at Boise State and he is eighth all-time in both completions (453) and career yards passing (5,740).

Through the first 10 games of the season, Bachmeier has thrown 17 touchdowns and just five interceptions, and his touchdown to interception ratio of 3.4-to-1 is the second-highest in the MW.

The Murrieta, Calif., native was named to the preseason 2021 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List and the 2021 Athlon Preseason All-MW and Phil Steele Preseason All-MW Fourth Teams.

This marks the seventh-consecutive year Boise State has had multiple award winners and the fourth time in the last six years it has placed five student-athletes on the all-district team.
