Broncos Drop Road Opener at BYU

PROVO, Utah – Four players scored in double figures and host BYU defeated Boise State 84-40 in nonconference women's basketball at the Marriott Center, Saturday.
 
The loss dropped the Broncos to 1-2 while the Cougars improved to 4-0.
 
"We competed in the first half and had our chances," Boise State Head Coach Gordy Presnell said. "We executed our stuff and got to the line. We just didn't make free throws. In the second half, it just got away from us."
 
The Broncos grabbed a 6-5 lead at the 6:51 mark of the first quarter on a jumper by Rachel Bowers. The Cougars responded with a 17-3 run to take a 22-9 lead with 17 seconds left in the quarter. Boise State then closed strong with a pair of free throws by Jayda Clark followed by a Mary Kay Naro steal and buzzer-beater jumper to trim the deficit to 22-13.
 
In the second quarter, two free throws by Elodie Lalotte pulled the Broncos within 22-15 before the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to takes their biggest lead of the first half at 29-15 with 6:39 remaining before intermission.
 
Boise State outscored BYU 8-4 the rest of the half with Bowers contributing a pair of baskets to make the score 33-23 BYU at the break.
 
The teams traded points early in the third quarter before BYU took command with a 15-1 run to up its advantage to 53-29.
 
Lalotte finished a game-high nine points for the Broncos and Naro recorded a career-high eight rebounds.
 
Boise State will take part in the Rocky Mountain Hoops Classic, Nov. 26-27 in Boulder, Colo. The Broncos open the tournament against Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m., Nov. 26.
