Boise State and BYU will face-off at 7 p.m. MT on Friday in the opening round at Provo, Utah.
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State volleyball, the 2021 Mountain West tournament champions, will face No. 11 seed and host BYU (28-1) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. MT at George Albert Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
The other match in Provo will feature Utah Valley (16-12) against Utah (21-8). The winners of each match will face off Saturday, in the second round. Tickets for the matches can be purchased through the BYU Athletics Ticket Office.
The Broncos (24-10) will be making their second NCAA Tournament appearance all-time (2016, 2021) and their fourth postseason tournament in the last six years (NIVC 2017, 2019). Boise State earned this season's trip by claiming the Mountain West Tournament title and the conference's automatic bid with a 3-1 victory over UNLV last Friday in Las Vegas. Boise State's 24 victories this season are tied for the third most all-time.
Boise State and BYU have met nine times previously, with the Cougars winning all of them. The last meeting between the programs came in 2019, with the Cougars winning in three sets in Provo.
The Broncos are led by two-time All-Mountain West selections Lauren Ohlinger and Danielle Boss, as well as MW Freshman of the Year Paige Bartsch. All three Broncos were selected to the MW All-Tournament Team last week and Ohlinger was named the Most Valuable Player.
On the year, Ohlinger tallied 443 kills to rank second in the MW and 35th nationally, 49 service aces (2nd MW / 18th NCAA) and 530 points (2nd MW / 23rd NCAA). At the MW Championship in Las Vegas, she had a team-high 38 kills, one service ace, 27 digs, six blocks (4 solos) and 44 points.
Boss led the MW on the year and ranked 30th nationally for total assists with 1,145. She became the seventh Bronco ever to reach the 3,000 career assists milestone with 3,296. Boss finished with 16 double-doubles, three during the MW tournament. In Las Vegas during the MW Championship, the senior tallied 115 assists, 10 kills, 35 digs and six blocks (two solos).
Bartsch missed nearly the entire nonconference slate but emerged as the top freshman in the league. The native of Helena, Mont., played a big role at the MW Tournament finishing with a team-second-best 34 kills to go with seven aces, 13 blocks and 49 points, all team highs. A true team player, following a rash of injuries on the team, the traditional middle blocker agreed to move to rightside hitter where she played the majority of the season. Bartsch finished the season with 149 kills, 20 service aces, 47 digs, 56 blocks (5 solo, 51 assists).
