MALIBU, Calif. – Dominique Leonidas and Anna Ostlie each scored 11 points in Boise State's 56-54 loss at Pepperdine, Saturday.
Trailing 53-41 with 5:19 to play, the Broncos (3-7) mounted a furious comeback that began with a 3-pointer by Ostlie. After the Waves (4-5) made a layup, Kaitlin Burgess drained a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 55-47 with 3:35 remaining.
The teams traded free throws before Ostlie hit a pair of 3-pointers to make the score 56-54 with 53 seconds to play. The Broncos made a stop on defense and had a chance to tie or take the lead, but never got a good look as time expired.
Both teams got off to a slow start failing to score in the game's first three minutes. Leonidas began and ended the scoring for the Broncos with a pair of jumpers and Burgess nailed a 3-pointer as Boise State led 10-8 after the first quarter.
Pepperdine opened the second period on an 8-1 run to take an 18-11 lead. Elodie Lalotte's layup at the 6:35 mark gave the Broncos their first field goal of the quarter. Sydney McQuietor came off the bench to contribute four points and Boise State pulled within 22-19 with 3:39 remaining before intermission. The Waves responded with a 9-2 run to end the half on top 31-21.
In the third quarter, Mary Kay Naro tallied six points and a second-chance layup by Leonidas cut the Broncos' deficit to 40-34 with 3:09 left. The Waves scored six of the final nine points in the period to lead 46-37.
