Ohlinger Ties School Record as Broncos Down Wyoming
2/20/2021 4:19:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Lauren Ohlinger tied the school record for kills in a match with 34 on Saturday while recording her third double-double of the season.
BOISE, Idaho - Boise State sophomore Lauren Ohlinger had a career day recording her third double-double of the season on a school record tying 34 kills and 13 digs to lead the Broncos to a weekend sweep of Wyoming Saturday afternoon. The series was a battle between teams previously tied at the top of the Mountain West standings with 4-0 records coming in. The two wins by the Blue and Orange Friday and Saturday improved Boise State to 6-0 overall as the Broncos moved into sole possession of first place.
"I thought it was a hard fought victory today for the Broncos," said head coach Shawn Garus. "I thought we were up and down today. We were really good some of the time and we were really bad at other times. But ultimately, I like getting the win over a solid Wyoming team. I thought that Lauren (Ohlinger) was a consistent performer for us offensively, she really carried us through and out of a lot of tough spots. I think our defense in the back court was outstanding today as well. I know that we won the dig battle by a wide margin (+15). Overall, everyone played hard and we won two big matches, so it was a good weekend."
Unlike Friday when Boise State won relatively easily, Saturday was a different story as the match went four sets and was decided by an average of 3.75 points per set. The Broncos opened by taking the first two sets before Wyoming regrouped to win the third 26-24 to force the match to a fourth period.
The fourth set was tight throughout with three points — by Boise State — being the largest lead of the frame. Trailing by one at 23-22, Boise State rallied for three straight points by Ohlinger, Kayly Pau and Alyssa Wissinger, respectively, to put the set and match away 25-20, 25-19, 24-26, 25-23.
Ohlinger's 34 kills tied the all-time school record set by Tara Brinkerhoff on Nov. 14, 2000 versus Idaho State. However, today's total by the sophomore is a Boise State rally scoring era (2001-present) record for kills in a match surpassing Liz Harden's 32 versus UNLV on Sept. 22, 2012. Ohlinger hit 30.7 percent on the day and tallied two assists, 13 digs and two block assists for a career-high 35 points.
Ohlinger felt confident heading into the week, "I think we've really been preparing this whole week in practice and working really hard having really good competition. I think it helped us a lot and I think we're definitely improving every weekend. I'm really proud of the team."
On how she felt personally coming into today's match and the record, "I was excited,' said Ohlinger. "I knew they were going to play a lot better today and that it was going to be tight. I just wanted to be out there swinging hard and playing my best for the team. I think it's crazy that I tied the record. I didn't know that until after the game, but I'm so excited. You know my team helped me get there, we just worked real hard out there today."
Pau followed with 11 kills and two blocks. Jessica Donahue hit 30 percent for 10 kills to go with a team-high five block assists. No one else reached double-digit kills in the match, but Danielle Boss also recorded her third double-double of the year on a team-high 50 assists and 15 digs.
Joining Ohlinger and Boss in double-figure digs was a solid back line beginning with Allison Casillas who had a team-high 19, followed by Boss, Jordi Holdaway and Ohlinger with 13 each, and Jolei Akima with 12.
Boise State finished the day hitting 23.5 percent for 68 kills on 62 assists, seven service aces, 75 digs and 8.5 blocks. Meanwhile, Wyoming hit 21.1 percent for 46 kills on 42 assists, six service aces, 60 digs and 12 blocks.
Boise State will hit the road next week when they travel to Las Vegas to face the UNLV Rebels. The Rebels swept Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend and are the only other remaining undefeated team in the conference at 4-0.
The Broncos defeated the Cowgirls in 4 sets and remain undefeated! 🏆🏐🎉
