Broncos Rally for Season Opening Win at SJSU
2/4/2021 3:34:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Ohlinger leads the team with a double-double on 15 kills and 14 digs.
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Trailing by one set, Boise State volleyball rallied past the San Jose State Spartans Thursday afternoon to claim a 3-1 season opening road victory in Mountain West play. Lauren Ohlinger, Kayly Pau and Jessica Donahue combined for 36 kills, three service aces, 18 digs and eight blocks to lead Boise State.
"I was proud of the way we played in the first match of the season," said head coach Shawn Garus. "After a slow start in the opening set, I thought we did a good job settling down in set two and started playing our game. The team did a good job of coming back and getting the win."
On the day, Boise State started slow dropping the opening set 25-16. The Broncos came back in the second set and led nearly the entire way in the final three periods taking them 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.
Ohlinger, last year's MW Freshman of the Year and a 2021 Spring Preseason All-MW honoree, led the team with a double-double on 15 kills and 14 digs, both team highs. While tallying a team-best 16 points, the sophomore finished the day hitting .289 with only four errors on 38 attacks.
True freshman Kayly Pau had a solid debut in the Blue and Orange recording 11 kills and four blocks to finish with 13.5 points.
"I thought that Lauren (Ohlinger) and Kayly (Pau) performed really well for us," said Garus "They were strong offensively, but they also did a good job defensively as well getting up for the block to cause problems for their setter."
Donahue hit a team-high .444 on the day going 10-2-18 in attacks. Her 10 kills were third on the team, while tying both Pau for the high in blocks with four and Danielle Boss for the lead in service aces with two.
"Jessica Donahue really played a well-rounded game today," Garus said. "She came out with energy and was consistent out there. She hit well and did a good job blocking." Â
Other Broncos earning their first action in the Blue and Orange include redshirt-freshman Annie Kaminski who finished with four kills and four blocks; Chey Jones who had five kills and two blocks; as well as Jolei Akima who tallied four digs.
Boise State will return to action tomorrow in the rematch with San Jose State. This match will be played on the SJSU campus with first serve set for 2 p.m. (MT). Today's contest was held at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., as a result of COVID-19 restrictions in San Jose, which have recently been lifted some to allow for the move back to SJSU's campus on Friday.
