Broncos Drop High-Scoring Affair

3/11/2021 7:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball

LAS VEGAS - Four Broncos scored in double figures, but it was not enough for fourth-seeded Boise State to overcome Nevada's offensive attack in the Mountain West Championship quarterfinal Thursday, at Thomas & Mack Center. The fifth-seed Wolf Pack shot 50.8 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range for an 89-82 victory.

Devonaire Doutrive made his first start of the season and responded with the first double-double of his career. Doutrive led the Broncos with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

His three-pointer one minute into the second half pulled Boise State (18-8) to within one at 51-50. Nevada (16-9) answered with a 13-3 run, while holding the Broncos without a field goal for 8:12.

Boise State cut the margin to five on two occasions and trailed by six with possession with 18 seconds left. Nevada was 10-for-12 from the free throw line in the final five minutes to stymie the comeback bid.

Nevada's backcourt combination of Desmond Cambridge and Grant Sherfield combined for 57 points. Cambridge was the game's leading scorer with 31.

The duo scored 33 points in the first half, combining to shoot 7-for-9 from three-point range. Boise State shot 69.6 percent from the field to keep pace and trailed 51-45 at the break.

Derrick Alston, Jr. scored 16 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. Emmanuel Akot, who started for the Broncos for the first time since Jan. 6, scored 15 points. RayJ Dennis came off the bench for the first time this season and scored 10 points, while fellow reserve Lukas Milner chipped in a career-high nine.

Boise State will learn its postseason fate Sunday.
