Broncos Rewrite Record Book At Mark Simpson Invite

BOULDER, Colo. – It was a record-setting performance for Boise State as it took home the title at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational at Colorado National Golf Club, Tuesday afternoon.

The Broncos posted a remarkable 269-262-287—818 (-46) as a team to win the tournament by 10 strokes. Boise State broke the Mark Simpson Invite records for 18-hole, 36-hole and 54-hole scores in addition to a number of program records.

The tournament was highlighted by a second round in which the Blue and Orange fired a blistering 26-under 262. The score set a program record for lowest team round, and according to the NCAA men's golf record book, ties for the third lowest team round in the history of collegiate men's golf.

The team score of 818 (46-under) secured the tournament victory and broke the program record for a three-round tournament score and ranks tied for 14th all-time according the NCAA men's golf record book.

"Yesterday was incredible, especially in the afternoon round," said head coach Dan Potter. "In the second round we only shot two bogeys as a team and three guys shot bogey-free rounds. That's just unheard of. Individually our guys are all more than capable of days like that, but to have all five guys do that in the same round with each of them shooting 68 or better is pretty awesome."

Max Charles (67-64-71—202) was the top finisher for the Broncos, finishing 14-under and taking home second-place honors. His tournament score of 202 tied for the sixth lowest ever by a Bronco.

Heading into day two with an 11-stroke lead, Potter knew his team would have to deliver in round three to secure a victory.

"Other teams played really well," said Potter. "An 11-shot lead is not a huge margin in team golf and we knew that we were going to have to come out in the final round and have a good day. We got tested today, we knew we would. Our guys responded with some good shots when they needed to and delivered an awesome team win."

Skyler Eubank (66-68-72—206) shot 10-under to finish tied for 7th, his second top-ten finish of the season. Joe Neuheisel (73-64-70—207) shot 10-under in his final two rounds to finish tied for 12th at 9-under. Hugo Townsend (66-66-75—207) also finished tied for 12th after carding back-to-back 66s on day one. Nick Hedman (70-68-74—212) rounded out the Bronco lineup, finishing tied for 33rd.

Charles' and Neuheisel's 64s tied for the fifth-lowest single round scores in school history.

Up next, Boise State will enjoy a week off before travelling to Corvallis, Ore., for the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Oct. 11-12.
