Shaver Comes Up Big Again as Broncos Sink Aztecs

SAN DIEGO – Marcus Shaver Jr. made his second game-winning three-pointer in three days to lift Boise State men's basketball to its 12th-straight victory Saturday, taking down Mountain West foe San Diego State 42-37 on the road. The win snapped San Diego State's 16-game home win streak and marked the Broncos' third all-time victory at Viejas Arena.
With the score tied at 37 and less than a minute to play, the Broncos (15-4, 6-0 MW) put the ball in Shaver's hands. Given the opportunity to offer an encore to his game-winning three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left Thursday, at Utah State, the redshirt senior delivered again. Shaver dribbled left for a side ball screen, spun back to the middle of the floor to escape a double team and found himself with enough daylight to rise up and drill his third three-pointer of the game with 30 seconds on the clock.
On the other end, Abu Kigab did not allow San Diego State's Matt Bradley to get a clean look. When the deep try bounced off, Tyson Degenhart corralled the rebound and was fouled with 0.8 seconds left. Degenhart made two free throws to secure the win and set off a celebration of not only Boise State's first win at Viejas Arena since 2016, but the culmination of five wins in 11 days in five different states. The stretch includes road victories at Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State and Utah State - the first time the Broncos have won at all four venues in the same season.
The second half started with Boise State outscoring the Aztecs 13-1 in the first 9:05, taking a 35-24 lead. The Broncos held San Diego State (10-4, 2-1 MW) without a field goal for the first 10:12 of the second period. The home team returned the favor, scoring the next 13 points and holding Boise State scoreless for 9:51. Lamont Butler capped the run with a three-pointer with 2:48 to play, putting San Diego State ahead 37-35.
The Broncos still trailed by two as the clock neared one minute to play. Degenhart was fouled on a drive and headed to the free throw line, where he made both and tied the game. After Boise State forced another miss, they brought the ball into the frontcourt and let Shaver do what he does best. Shaver finished with 13 points, his 15th time in double figures this season.
Degenhart led all scorers with 14 points, including going 8-for-8 at the free throw line. He has made 17 consecutive free throws. Degenhart has reached double-figure scoring nine times during Boise State's 12-game winning streak and led the team in scoring four times during the stretch.
Boise State put on a defensive masterclass all game, limiting San Diego State to its lowest point total of the season and just 28.1 percent shooting (16-of-57). The Aztecs' 37 points are the fewest allowed by Boise State since 2015. Boise State has now held 12 opponents to fewer than 60 points in 2021-22, the second-most in a single season during the Leon Rice era.
In the first half, Boise State jumped out to a 6-0 after holding San Diego State scoreless for nearly six minutes to open the game. The Aztecs battled back into the game and closed out the half making three-straight buckets to take a one-point lead into the break.
Boise State has won its first six conference games for the second straight season and third time in program history. The Broncos will look to extend the winning streak Tuesday, at home against Wyoming. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT at ExtraMile Arena and the game can be seen on Stadium.
