COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State's Bhakti Shah has been named the Mountain West Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for the week of Jan. 20-25 as announced Wednesday by the league office. This is Shah's first weekly honor at Boise State.
Shah played a vital role for the Broncos last weekend as they recorded the best overall team record, 22-12, of the four schools at the Long Beach State Winter Invitational.
Shah went 2-1 in singles play competing versus opponents that typically compete at the five through six positions for their respective teams.
On the opening day of the competition, Shah went three sets to win a hard fought match over Long Beach State's Zuzanna Szczepanska 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
On the second day, the freshman from India won her second three-set contest. This time it came against Portland's Marija Elenova 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
On Sunday she played in her third-straight three-set match of the event. Unfortunately, her luck ran out as she came up short after rallying from a set down to force the contest into a third frame before falling to Portland's Jana Tanevska 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
Shah and her teammates will take this weekend off before starting the team dual season on the road Feb. 4-5 at Provo, Utah, where they will face both Dixie State and BYU.
