Garus Signs Texas Prep Standout Layla Smith to NLI

BOISE, Idaho – Shawn Garus, Boise State Head Volleyball Coach, announced today that Layla Smith from Humble, Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Broncos for 2023. Smith is a 6-foot-2 middle blocker/outside hitter from Atascocita High School where she is a two-time all-district honoree.
 
Smith has been a three-year member and starter for the Eagles' varsity team coached by Madeline Odom. She has helped AHS to a combined three-year record of 63-43 overall and 32-6 in the league, three-consecutive Texas 6A Bi-District championships, and three straight Area tournament finals.
 
This fall, she recorded a team-high 235 kills and a team-best 2.3 kills per set average, to go with 96 digs and 46 blocks. As a junior in 2021, Smith tallied 227 kills, 106 blocks (11 solo and 95 assists) and 84 digs.
 
Other prep honors include being named as a junior to the 2021 AVCA Phenom Watch List and the LoneStarPrep.com High School Top Blocker. As a senior, she was named to the AVCA All-American Watch List, GHVCA 2022 Pre-Season Team, and the LoneStarPrep.com High School Top Blocker. She was also a team captain as a senior.
 
Smith played her club ball for the Houston Skyline Volleyball Club coached by Jamie Morrison.
