Ben Hilgart Named Director of Sports Performance for Football

BOISE, Idaho – Veteran strength coach Ben Hilgart has been named director of sports performance for Boise State football, head coach Andy Avalos announced, Thursday.
Hilgart has 20-plus years of experience with stops at Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, Ohio State, UTEP and Western Illinois.
"Ben has a long history of helping develop young men on and off the field," Avalos said. "His passion and energy demands maximum effort and he will get the best out of our players."
He began his career in 2001 as the head strength coach and assistant defensive line coach at his alma mater, Western Illinois. After working at UTEP as a graduate assistant, Hilgart spent two seasons at Ohio State, earning a promotion to associate strength and conditioning coach in 2004.
The Park Falls, Wis., native worked at Arizona State for seven years, including the last four as the head sports performance coach. He oversaw the Sun Devils' 20-sport program and worked directly with football. During his tenure, tight end Zach Miller was named a 2006 All-American.
From 2012-15, Hilgart was at New Mexico. For his final-two seasons in Albuquerque, he was the director of athletic performance. He was responsible for a redesign of the Athletic Performance Center. In 2016, Hilgart became the associate athletic director for strength and conditioning at Virginia Tech, a position he held for six seasons. He worked with 16 Hokies who were selected in the NFL Draft, including four first-round picks.
Hilgart was an assistant strength coach at Arizona in 2022 and has been named a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the highest honor in the profession.
