Shaver, Jr. to Return for 2022-23

BOISE, Idaho – Marcus Shaver, Jr. will return to the Boise State men's basketball program next season, the rising sixth-year senior announced on social media, Wednesday. Shaver, Jr. has one year of eligibility remaining as a result of the NCAA rule allowing student-athletes on 2020-21 rosters an additional season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shaver, Jr. started each of his 34 games played in 2021-22, earning second-team All-Mountain West honors and second-team all-district accolades from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
He ranked second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game, and led the team with 26 games in double figures. Included were five 20-point games, the second most on the team. Shaver, Jr. knocked down 3-pointers against Utah State (Jan. 20), San Diego State (Jan. 22), Fresno State (Jan. 28) and Colorado State (Feb. 13) that either secured a victory or forced overtime.
Shaver, Jr.'s 38 steals ranked second on the team, and his 2.1 assists per game ranked third on the Broncos.
"We are thrilled to have Marcus back for another season of Bronco basketball," head coach Leon Rice said. "Not only is Marcus a special player, he's a very integral part of our program. The continuity of leadership and experience that he provides will help us continue to elevate this program to new heights."
This past season, Shaver, Jr. helped lead Boise State to program records for total wins (27), conference wins (15) and consecutive wins (14) on its way to winning the MW regular-season title outright and capturing the MW Tournament crown - both firsts for the program. The Broncos' No. 8 seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament was the highest in program history.
