BOISE, Idaho - Boise State Athletics will provide financial awards to student-athletes in the 2022-23 academic year, among other educationally-related benefits, thanks to its new Academic Achievement Fund, announced Monday by director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey.
"The Academic Achievement Fund not only encourages excellence in the classroom, it demonstrates our commitment to impacting the holistic student-athlete experience at Boise State," Dickey said.
Boise State's awards will be split between qualification periods in the fall and spring semesters. Eligibility for Academic Achievement Awards will be based on academic eligibility; active enrollment and roster status; participation in the BroncoLife program; and good standing with university and athletic department code of conduct. Student-athletes who meet the qualifications during the fall 2022 semester will receive as much as half of the allowable annual allotment in March 2023. Spring semester qualifiers will receive their award in October 2023.
The NCAA began allowing institutions to provide educationally-related benefits not included in cost of attendance scholarships in August 2020. That program was expanded as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2021 ruling in the NCAA v. Alston case that paved the way for athletic departments to directly support their student-athletes with monetary awards based on academic performance.
The maximum allowable award under NCAA legislation is $5,980. The value of each award at Boise State will be determined by the contributions received to the fund from private support and department allocations.
Contributions to the Academic Achievement Fund can be made directly to Boise State Athletics and the Bronco Athletic Association. Gifts and pledges made toward Lyle Smith Society membership can be directed to the Academic Achievement Fund. For more information about how to support this initiative, contact the Bronco Athletic Association at 208-426-3556 or baa@boisestate.edu.
A department committee, which recently finalized the distribution plan for the 2022-23 academic year, will meet during the 2023 spring semester to review the program and assess any appropriate changes for future years.
