9/2/2022 11:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Boise State defeated the ACC’s Fighting Irish Friday night to earn a split in California.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Boise State volleyball claimed an impressive 3-1 (25-18, 13-25, 25-18, 25-18) victory over the Atlantic Coast Conference's Notre Dame Fighting Irish Friday night in Long Beach, Calif. It was a contest of momentum with only two lead changes in the entire match. The first team to establish momentum in each set won all four.

The Broncos won all three of their sets by identical scores of 25-18, and in each, they took an early lead which they never relinquished. In the opening set, the Broncos raced out to a 6-1 advantage and led by as many as seven.

In set two, Notre Dame came out fired up and ran out to an early 8-2 lead. The Irish never trailed in the frame and rolled to a 12-point win over the Blue and Orange to tie the match up at 1-1.

Boise State regrouped and claimed a small lead early in the third, then held the Irish at bay before pulling away down the stretch. The fourth set was much like the second; after dropping the opening point, the Blue and Orange raced to a 6-2 advantage then stretched it out to eight late in the frame to clinch the set and the 3-1 victory over Notre Dame.

QUOTABLES
Shawn Garus, Head Coach
  • On regrouping from Thursday's loss to Long Beach State. "I think we struggled on our serve and pass at a level that was not going to keep us in the match against Long Beach State last night. It was good to see a response and the toughness of our team to come out and play a much better match from start to finish against a very good Notre Dame team today."
  • On the play of Paige Bartsch and the team's confidence. "Paige looked a lot more comfortable in her second match of the season tonight, and that's a good sign of things to come. I think the team is excited about where we're at and focused on getting ready for the next match against Idaho State on Monday."
BRONCO LEADERS
  • Paige Bartsch just missed her second-straight double-double finishing the match with a team-high 16 kills to go with nine digs and three block assists to finished with a team-best 17.5 points.
